About Cheryl

In my family, it was all about learning. My father was a department head at Stanford University and my mother's grandparents both had 4-year college degrees, which was fairly unusual in the 1920's.

I have had the good fortune to attend (grades 6-12) and graduate from Polytechnic School, considered by the Ivy League Schools to be one of the best college prepatory schools in the U.S. I then graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, CA, studying English Literature, Theater, and French. When visiting my sister over vacation (she was a graduate student at Harvard), the head of graduate admissions told me he would take a Pomona graduate over a Stanford graduate any day, because Pomona trains their students for graduate school. High praise from Harvard graduate admissions, and much appreciated.

So yes, I love school, I love learning, and I would like to help your child find that love of learning, too. Remember, parents, you can save a bunch of money if your child takes and passes those AP exams. My sister went into college as a sophmore, thereby saving my parents one whole year of tuition!

I enjoy working with young people, and seeing them improve in their language skills.

I started by volunteering at local elementary schools, working with ReadingPartners.  Many of the students were one grade behind where they needed to be on the reading and comprehension scale.  Of course, as a student moves from grade to grade, there is more homework that has to be read.  So if you can't read, it will be difficult to be successful in your classes.

I have been fortunate to attend some of the best private educational institutions in the United States.  I learned to write 15-page term paper in the sixth grade.  In high school, we used college text books.    When I got to college, other students were complaining about how much they had to read for each subject, and it was all so easy for me.  Thank you, Polytechnic School (Pasadena Poly)!

After I finished my college education, I would volunteer at libraries for their Literacy Programs, and I found that very rewarding.  The past school year, I tutored for free for ReadingPartners, a national non-profit that works to increase the reading level of students who are currently reading one grade level below where they should be.  It makes me so happy, knowing that I am helping a student make progress.  I will be tutoring for them again this year.

I need to find out how they learn best -- by talking, writing, listening, using flash cards, etc.  Different people assimilate information in different ways.  Also, people have different attention spans, so there is no point in working together for 60 minutes, if someone is going to start getting restless and tuning out after 30 minutes.

I normally charge $60 per hour.  If I should find a student who applies themselves well, but their family can't afford the $60 per hour, I will work with them to come up with an equitable fee.
