About Mark
I specialize in essay writing, test preparation, reading strategies, and almost anything English related. I have been a teacher for 5 years in the classroom and am a licensed teacher. Also I have a BS in Psychology and a Masters in English. I am confident that I can improve students' reading and writing abilities.
I enjoy seeing that lighbulb turn on and having students understand what they felt they couldn't do before. I love changing mindsets where students see themselves as capable learners and not some stuck with what they are born with. I think with some patience and guidance students are willing to improve their confidence about their school performance.
I started teachng in California in a diverse and low income area. I transitioned from social work where I worked with troubled youth so I have a lot of patience and empathy for students to help them succeed.
I have a BS in Psychology where I works with troubled youth and youth with special needs for 5 years. I then went back to school to get my Masters in English and Creative Writing and continued in school to get my teaching license. The past 5 years I have been a teacher in the classroom for English, Honors, and English Language Learners and have taught in Middle and High School.

I seek to get to understand my student's frame of mind-- how they veiw themself as a learner and performer. I seek to understand their strengths and where they want to improve. My goal is to coach and mentor and not do the work for them as learning is put back on the student. I give many opportunties to try and make mistakes and learn without feeling judged or bad. I reinforce that mistakes are part of the learning process.
I have worked with students that are on level, that are multiple grade levels behind, honor students, and students with laguange needs and minor special needs.
Be alright with making mistakes as it is part of the learning process. It is not about perfection, but it is about improvment. You have to reflect on your own skills and work and be willing to make goals and examine your own efforts. If you can do that I can teach you the skills that can make you successful in the classroom and life.
I had a student that the first week he came in and acted like he didn't want to be there and he wouldn't give me the time of day. He was more concerned with being cool in front of his friends. Over a few months I had a lot of one on one discussions about his potention and also about him improving his behavior. He started doing better in my class, but still got in trouble in other teacher's classes. I kept talking with him to counsel and build rapport. By half way through the school year he couldn't wait each day to come in my door and show me that he had straight A+s in all of his classes and he wrote me a very nice letter sharing how I changed his life. Those are the moments teachers hold onto.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do I know my strengths and weaknesses?
Do I believe that I can turn a weakness into a strength?
Am I willing to examine my work and skills to understand what I am doing well and need to improve on?
Am I alright with making mistakes in order to learn and get better with every try?
