About Shelly
I ALWAYS wanted to be a teacher. I can remember lining up my stuffed animals and playing school with them when I was little. I love my job in the library, but I miss teaching skills and seeing students gain confidence.
I have a Bachelor's in Elementary Education, a Masters Degree in Library Science, and I also have an Education Specialist degree in Administration.
I have 18 years of teaching experience (mostly in intermediate 3-5). I have training in Common Core, Thoughtful Education, Marilyn Burns Math, and Singapore Math. I also spent five years in a Teaching American History program which taught me to teach history as a mystery. (Very fun!)
I am also extremely proficient with current technology.

Relationships are critical to having success with student learning. It is very important to get to know the new student by asking questions, playing getting to know you games, and by showing a genuine interest in his/her life. Getting a feel for the student's work habits, strengths, and weaknesses will greatly contribute to the success of the tutoring sessions.
I have worked with Gifted and Talented as well as Special Education. My years in public school have provided many opportunities to work with a very diverse group of students.
You need to find a good fit. You need to find someone who teaches to your learning style. You need to find someone you genuinely like and trust. Relationships are critical.
Recently, my son, who is a freshman in college, called to tell me he changed his major from law to education. He told me that he has seen the impact I've made on so many students, he wants to also make a difference in the world like I have. (Yes, I cried.)
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Hopefully the teachers in your student's life has worked to create a relationship built on trust and respect. Having that established will allow the student to feel vulnerable when asking for help. If not, students need to have a trusted adult at school who will listen and help provide the support that is needed.
