About Yona

I believe the most important step toward improving in any subject area is to understand what learning methods work best for *you,* and to make the tutoring process as engaging as possible. There is no one-size-fits-all way to learn, and our tutoring sessions will be based on what is most helpful for you.

I have a masters degree in social work and a background in child and adolescent psychology. I have tutored extensively in a number of subjects, from writing to statistics, and as a graduate student I taught university level psychology classes at the University of Michigan.

My background makes me well suited to help you not only advance your understanding of course content, but more importantly to build confidence in your skills, address school-related anxieties that may be affecting your performance, and help you learn *how to learn* more effectively.

I look forward to working with you!

I have 10 younger siblings, so spent most of my adolescent and adult life informally tutoring and helping out with homework around the table. A few of my siblings have different learning needs, including ADHD and developmental disabilities, and I realized that some of the homework methods that worked well for me when I was a student weren't the right approach. I started doing my own research into learning theories and methods so I could better help my little siblings, and I got so excited every time we found a new approach to help make material "click." I started formally tutoring my second year of college, and have continued on and off ever since!

I have a Masters degree in Social Work and a Bachelors of Science in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience, with minors in Writing and Applied Statistics, both from the University of Michigan.

About the lesson

First, I'd like to know what you currently need help with, and what strategies you've tried in the past. Do you prefer learning through videos? By physically manipulatng objects?

Based on your needs and any upcoming benchmarks (tests, due dates, etc), we'll come up with a work plan and adjust as needed. The most important thing is flexiblity; if we keep doing the same thing week after week and it isn't working, there's no reason not to try a new approach!

I've worked with a broad range of students, including those with ADHD, learning disabilities, and anxiety. I enjoy working with students of all ages, from K-University.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what it is that's holding you back from reaching your potential. Are things going too quickly in the classroom? Do you feel like you understand when a teacher explains something, then struggle to do it yourself shortly after? Is the material not quite making sense? Depending on your answer to these questions, teachers and tutors can help you pinpoint where extra support will be most helpful
