About Richard
Richard Manly Heiman is a middle school English and history teacher and a widely published author (poetry and short fiction). He holds an MA in English and Creative Writing and an MFA in Writing and is pursuing secondary English teaching certification.
Richard loves helping students develop increased proficiency in reading comprehension and writing, and he is also available for coaching, editing, and proofreading creative writing.
From 2008 to 2010 I taught performing arts and 8th grade science. From 2010 to 2019 I substitute taught grades K-12. From 2012 to 2017 I taught in summer camps for gifted students, and from 2018 to 2020 I taught in summer writing camps for elementary students. I have been teaching English full time since 2019.
I hold advanced degrees in English and writing, and I have nearly two years of lead teacher classroom experience in English. I also have summer writing camp and online writing instruction experience.

I find that 45 minute sessions work best. I prefer to give students material in advance on a platform such as Google Classroom, and I may assign work outside of the tutoring session as necessary.
I have worked with gifted students, aspiring writers, grade level students, and English language learners (ELL's).
Students should think about what they already know and what they want to know before engaging a tutor's services. The more specific a student's needs are presented, the more a tutor can tailor tutoring sessions to meet those needs.
I'm very fond of recently completing an art history course which not only inspired my own writing but gave me additional options for lesson planning in English and history.
