About Emma

All of my tutorials are personalized. Each one is a conversation with the tutee, and to have an effective, helpful conversation, I need to view them as an individual.

I absolutely love seeing improvement in my tutees. Whether it's during the first tutorial or after several, seeing them become more confident and skilled in their writing is the best reward I could possibly ask for.

I have been editing and tutoring college-level writing since I was thirteen, when my mother, a college professor, started giving me her and her students' writing to edit. When I got to college, I knew that this informal experience would translate well into more formal tutoring, and so I jumped on the opportunity to take a tutor training course and get a job at my university's writing center.

I took a semester-long tutor training course in college in which I was taught various tutoring strategies. After the course was complete, I worked as a tutor for writing, reading, and oral presentations for five semesters. In that time, I assisted in founding a new embedded tutoring program and mentored several other tutors.

About the lesson

The first thing I always do is build rapport with my tutees. Not only is this fun for both of us, it also gives me an idea of how to comfortably interact with them to make the tutorial go smoother. Next, we discuss what the tutee wants to accomplish in this tutorial and set up a plan based on that. Then comes the most variable and personalized part - the body of the tutorial. This consists of us executing the plan we put in place and adding to it if we discover anything else the tutee would like to work on. Finally, at the end of the tutorial, we discuss what we've accomplished and make a plan for what the tutee will do after the tutorial.

College age students of all backgrounds and in all disciplines. From technical writing to essay writing to creative writing, I've seen, done, and tutored it all. My experience with college-level writing also translates very well into college prep writing for high school students.

Come in with an open mind about yourself. I can tell you from personal experience, you're probably a better writer than you give yourself credit for. It's also great to have an open mind about what you can improve on. Often during the course of my tutorials, the tutee and I set out with one area of improvement in mind and came across completely different ones along the way.

During the final meeting of writing center staff for the fall semester of 2021, I was surprised with gifts and words of gratitude from the writing center director and my mentees. It was incredibly heartwarming and is a memory I will treasure forever.
