About Christopher
Hello there! My name's Chris Vanjonack, and I'm excited to help you or your student take their next steps in Language Arts, be it at the middle, high school, or undergraduate level. I believe that positive relationships with students are essential to helping students grow--drawing upon my seven years of teaching experience, I meet students where they're at to help nurture their skills as readers, writers, and thinkers.
Before moving to Long Beach, I taught middle and high school language arts for four years at Poudre School District's Global Academy, where I served as the department head for the middle school Language Arts department. After that, I headed to the midwest where I earned my M.F.A. in Fiction Writing and taught first-year composition and creative writing to undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, appearing for three consecutive years on the UIUC List of Teachers Recognized as Excellent.
As a fiction writer and freelance journalist, my writing has appeared in esteemed outlets and literary magazines such as One Story, Electric Literature, The Rumpus, Barrelhouse, CRAFT Literary, and Denver Westword. A portfolio of my work and credentials can be found at chrisvanjonack.com.
Whether you're looking for help with reading comprehension, creative writing, academic research, or anything in-between, I'm thrilled to meet your tutoring needs!
I love working with students, particularly those who don't consider themselves to be readers and writers! As much as I enjoy reading and writing on my own time, there's something very special about helping young people find a way into the material.
I got started teaching in 2015 because I have a deep passion for reading, writing, and working with students!

I start out my tutoring sessions with new students by asking them what their goals are for this subject matter, and what their hopes are for our time working together as student and tutor-- where do they hope to be as readers and writers in the next few weeks? In six months? In a year? By grounding our tutoring relationship in goal setting, I find that I am better able to get to know my students as readers, writers, and human beings, a baseline that helps me to better support them throughout the tutoring process.
I've had success working with middle, high school, and undergraduate students from all across the spectrum-- from those who are passionate about reading and writing to those who view these areas as a significant area for growth.
Find a teacher or tutor who has a growth mindset when it comes to reading and writing, who values the content of your writing over rigid perfectionism, and who helps you tap into your ideas, beliefs, and experiences to grow as a writer.
Last spring, a number of my former 9th grade students invited me to come back for their high school reunion! It was an honor to be invited, and to attend :).
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I'd consider the following questions:
-What are you hoping to get out of this experience-- an easy A in a particular class, or a foundational change to how you think about reading and writing?
-What are your goals for yourself as a writer, reader, and thinker?
