About Deanna

While the humanities are often underestimated (and of course no one loves writing essays), I have found that nothing is more inspiring than exploring the worlds of literature, philosophy, and art.

Still, I know it is not easy to engage in material that can come across as needlessly difficult or simply boring. That is why beyond improving your grades, I make it my mission to find ways you, yourself, connect to the work.

The beauty of the humanities is that there is no right answer. So, let us discover your answer.

As a Columbia University graduate whose background heavily consisted of humanities classes ranging from classic literature to film, I know how challenging and yet eye opening these subjects can be. I also understand analysis is not meant to be tackled alone. How do we find our answers? Write an A paper? Create an engaging presentation?

First, we have to talk about the material--discuss, question, criticize, and maybe even joke.

I have worked with students, anywhere between middle school and college levels. I know the value of being creative and compassionate in one's teaching style, regardless of a student's skill level or background. I immersed teens in critical analysis of books they believed to be unreadable and demystified the art of the paper.

I was also fortunate enough to work with Uptown Stories, a nonprofit organization that nurtures young creative writers. Whether running workshops on dystopian world-building or facilitating a discussion on magical realism in film, I was thrilled to watch students fall in love with storytelling in its various mediums.

Be it creativing or academic writing, I have improved students’ skills by several grade levels and introduced a love of art and literature students can carry with them wherever they go.

Improvement, or more specifically, success is possible once passion is introduced in the mix. I enjoy not only bringing my passion to you, but nurturing yours.

About the lesson

My process is different with every student, for no two students are the same. However, I like to first establish the student's goals. Essentially, what would you like to get out of our time together? I ask the student to pick a material goal (such as grade improvement) and a more personal goal. For instance, maybe there is a genre of writing you wish to understand better or you want to write a short story just to prove you can.

After establishing a student's goals, I then ask about the student's interests, be it academic or outside of school. From here, I create a curriculum that engages the student's existing passions with the required material. I tend to intertwine time for discussion, exercises, and feedback in every session.

I have worked with students ranging from six to 19 years old. I have encourned skills levels of all kinds and students with varying goals. But whether a student wishes to simply get an A in class, submit their writing to competitions, or even improve their literacy in the English language, I have approached every student as an unique individual. Thus, my teaching style adapts to the individual.

While a bit cliche, my advice is simple: Pick a teacher who cares. Indeed, how can the student care about the subject matter if the teacher does not?

Once, when a student had been trying to choose a theme from the Great Gastby to write a paper on, she had realized an unmentioned theme--theme that had not been mentioned in her class or by me. She asked with sudden excitement, "Is greed just someone's version of need?" And just like that, she had asked a fantastic question she would go on to write about. But a few weeks earlier, she told me she didn't have any questions about the book and found it annoying. To see such vast change in her attitude, it made me very happy.
