About Kathy

I am passionate about helping students become prolific in English so they can succeed in the global workplace.

I taught school for almost 30 years. I taught all core subjects at one time or another in Middle School. I taught ESOL students as well as English-speaking students. I am proud of the way I was able to make separate lesson plans to meet the needs of special needs students.

I have a Middle School - all core subjects - certification for the state of Arkansas.

I always wanted to teach. As a little girl, I would teach my dolls or younger children in my neighborhood who would play school with me. I lived next door to a teacher and I would borrow a teacher book from her. I was happiest when I was playing school. It was a natural progression for me to major in education.

I have had many workshops about ESOL and opportunities to work one-on-one with ESOL students. I have also worked with them in a large classroom setting.

About the lesson

First, I ask the student about his/her interests and hobbies. I then incorporate these interests and hobbies in every avenue which will help the student grasp the concept at hand. This process also makes the new student more comfortable because he/she has had the opportunity to talk about himself/herself.

I have worked with mainstream, ESOL students and Special Ed students.

I would advise the student to look for someone who made them feel good about themselves.

Recently, I flew to Omaha to visit my daughter and her family. She has three children and I was able to spend quality time with each of them. My four-year-old grandddaughter stayed home with me one day. We decorated snowflakes with sparkly jewelry-type stickers and I made a head from a paper plate by gluing skin-colored paper over the paper plate. I then added googly eyes and, using a marker, I drew the nose and mouth. I cut different-size wavy streamers from construction paper and glued the long streamers on the back of the "head" and the short streamers above the googly eyes on the front. The streamers represented hair and the ones above the eyes represented bangs. I then gave my granddaughter a pair of safety scissors and she cut the "hair". How much fun was that?
