About Michael

From a simple declarative sentence to a novel or memoir, I teach writing based on student needs and dreams. I have a Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) degeree from the University of Arizona and have 40 years experience writing and teaching writing in all genres at four universities, including UCLA and California State University, Long Beach, and have published two books on creative writing, as well as several poems and stories.

Few things are as challenging and warmly gratifying as teaching writing. Unlike many other subjects, writing engages the whole student, often in very intimate and surprising ways. The writing process is inherently a process of discovery and, as such, is always exciting.

In graduate school (1976-80), I was assigned to teach two classes of freshman English Composition as a graduate assistant. I thought an assistantship meant helping out in the classroom, but soon learned that we were expected to teach the classes, not just help out. What followed was a crash course in learning not only how to teach writing, but actually learning how to write exposition. (The best way to learn is to teach!)

I have a bachelor's degree in English (writing) and a Master's in Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Creative Writing, both from the University of Arizona.

Typically, I ask for background information and try to discover student aims and objectives. I also want to know about any writing deadlines, for a class or for other reasons.

I like to discover a student's most comfortable learning style and instructional medium (in person, email, social media chat, ets.)

All ages and ethnic groups, including students with special needs. I have worked mainly with freshmen college students.

It will pay to isolate and be able to articulate the aspects of writing that challenge you the most, whether that is a small thing, like punctuation and spelling or larger rhetorical issues.

The better focused you are in terms of what you think you need, the more efficient the instructor can be in offering instruciton.

I traveled to Cannon Ball, ND, to join fellow veterans at Standing Rock in opposing the NDPL. (Cold but worth it.) I also canvassed in four states for the primary presidential election. A fascinating experience!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Why do you think you need help with writing?

2. What have you already done to help yourself?

3. How do you approach writing projects and assignments?

4. If writing seems hard or makes you uncomfortable, what aspects give you the hardest time?
