About Brian

Brian Hayes has been providing in-person guitar/fretted instrument and piano lessons throughout the greater Orlando area since 1996 and offers Zoom lessons for students who are outside of the Central Florida area.

His playing experience includes over 25 years in electric, acoustic and nylon string guitar in the styles of rock, metal, classical and flamenco and has been formally trained in the areas of classical guitar and classical piano.

Through his years of teaching experience, Brian has perfected step-by-step methods for beginner to advanced guitar and beginner to intermediate piano, reflecting the variety of styles in his musical background. In addition to instructional books, teaching materials include: progress sheets for keeping detailed records of the student’s progress, chord and scale diagrams, rhythm exercises with various strumming and finger-style patterns, complete scale program starting from beginner and working up to advanced, music theory materials and Brian’s guitar tablature library, all of which are available in PDF format to be printed for (or emailed to) the student.

About the lesson

As a general rule, students who are brand new at guitar/ukulele/bass/mandolin and under the age of 12, note-reading basics through the Hal Leonard Method, Book 1, is my typical approach. They will then learn their first chord fairly quickly (excluding bass students) and once proficient in the basic chords, they'll begin my own chord and rhythm teaching method, which I provide for them. The Hal Leonard supplemental books, "Easy Pop Melodies," are then added, which is a fantastic way for the student to apply the note-reading skills they learned in the method book to more modern music selections. A smart phone app, called "IReal Pro" (which can be used on any smart phone or tablet in conjunction with a Bluetooth speaker) will be introduced, which provides backing tracks for the student for all of the method books that I teach from. For piano, my preferred methods are the "Alfred Basic Piano Library Course" or Bastien’s "Older Beginner Piano Course," depending on the age of the student, Schirmer's "The Virtuoso Pianist in Sixty Exercises" and the "Keith Snell Piano Repertoire" for advanced students.

Since many of my adult guitar students (whether beginner or otherwise) may already have some idea of the styles of guitar that interest them, a different approach is taken. For example, some adult students may already know that they're interested in Flamenco, Metal, Classical guitar, etc.. For my adult guitar students, I've found that the first step in formulating a method plan is to get an idea of the styles/genres of music that interest them. My teaching plan is then customized for them, specifically, to fit their musical interests and goals. IReal Pro is used to provide backing tracks for everything the student is working on, whether it be technique in the songs/pieces they choose, scales & arpeggio exercises, chords & rhythm, etc..

If the student is in the greater Orlando area, there is an option of me traveling to them for a $5 trip charge, provided they're not more than 20 miles from me. (I live in the Lake Mary area.) The other option is online video lessons, via Zoom:
