About Robert
I received my Bachelors degree in music with a concentration in guitar from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC in 2015. After that, I attended the University of North Carolina School of The Arts for 3 semesters as the graduate teaching assistant for guitar. Having a formal education in music allows me to accurately assess each student's needs and create a fun learning experience by catering the curriculum to the individual.
I have been playing guitar for 16 years, and teaching for 7 years. During this time, I've had the privilege of playing many different styles of music and teaching a wide variety of students. Young, old, experienced, and complete beginners have all taken lessons from me at one point or another, and I am grateful to them for the opportunity to learn so much about teaching. My favorite part of teaching music is seeing a student's eyes light up as they realize that they are capable of achieving their musical goals. I also really enjoy getting to know so many different people from different walks of life. The meaning of music from one person's perspective is as unique as the individual's personality, and I'm lucky to get to experience so many different viewpoints.
I started teaching during my freshman year of college at a local music store. At this point, I had been playing for roughly a decade but had never taught anyone before. I had no idea how different performing and teaching were! Needless to say, it was very difficult at first. I am just so grateful that I started when I did so that I may know what I know now about music education.
I have a Bachelors degree in music with a concentration in guitar. I've been playing guitar for 16 years and teaching for 7 of those years.

When working with a new student, my first goal is to figure out what they already know and what they want to achieve by taking lessons. I'll usually just ask the student to talk a little bit about their experience and then have them play something they know well. This isn't an audition or anything, there's no pressure. The student could play me an excerpt from a Bach piece or just "that one part of that one popular song" that they learned 10 years ago.
After answering those two questions, I'll either provide the student with a new piece of music (especially if they are a beginner) or I'll introduce a new skill in the context of some music that they already know.
I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, from 4 year olds to 70 year olds. Every student has a different personality and a different reason for studying music. One person might want to learn music theory so that they can write songs with greater ease, while another person will use playing an instrument as a form of physical therapy after a car accident. It's my job to guide you in your musical journey, wherever you would like it to go.

Details
My pricing is as follows:
$25 for 30 minutes
$40 for 60 minutes
I ask that the student always be paid up for at least one week in advance. This is to ensure that I am compensated for my time if the student cancels at the last minute. This means that I would ask for 2 lesson payments at the beginning of the first lesson, and then 1 payment at the beginning of each lesson after that.
