About Shamus

I am currently a first semester Freshman at Northampton Community College, my major being Political Science. Throughout high school, I took several AP courses and was the captain of our competitve speech and debate team. In addition, I've done workshops with local senators and plan to attend a conference on local activism and climate change. I have an abundence of practical and academic experience with government, history, academic and creative writing, philosophy, economics, and public speaking. I understand what it's like to be completely blindsided by a lecture in class. Trust me, I've been there and currently am experiencing it myself. That is why I can assist you best in understanding these really important concepts that are foundational to both academic discourse and society.

I've been freelancing as a tutor for fellow students for years, from re-explaining lectures to summerizing themes in books to even helping rewrite entire research papers.

I am currently studying political science and philosophy, have extensive history researching and competing in public policy debate, freelance tutored in high school for history and language arts, and in general have a vast knowledge of philosophy, government, economics, and history from years of personal research out of love for the subjecs.

All discussion would be conducted over either email or direct message, depending on the personal preferences of each student.

I've worked with fellow students of mine as well as students above me studying similar subjects.

Look for someone who is genuinely passionate about what they do and what they know.

Frankly most current events have been rather depressing, as the state of the country, being my home country the United States, is not exactly something to be proud of. The most recent event I can say I am proud of is the federal legalization of equal marriage.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Always always always ask for clarifcation of specific phrases, terms, and general themes discussed by the teacher in class as opposed to asking to reteach the entire class. For example, if you're in a U.S. History class, don't ask for your teacher to explain the Industrial Revolution in its entirity, but rather ask to explain a specific characteristic you noticed, whether its the expansion of women in the workforce, the term "industrial capitalism", or the rise of labor unions. Another effective strategy is to ask their opinion on the topic. I've learned more by asking my teachers their thoughts on literature or historical movements than from any textbook.

Pay what you can. I know I'm not a professional educator, so I'm not going to charge a set rate beyond what the average consumer is looking for. If you need help with something, just contact me and we can work something out, even if it's just a few dollars to look over an essay or explain something. The maximum I would charge is $20 for a five sessions, but even that is negotiable depending on need.
