I want to take martial arts…but WHERE do I begin?

Most people who want to begin studying the martial arts with us have little or no experience with martial arts. They usually have lot’s of questions such as “What do I do? Do I need a uniform? What is the first step?” We specialize at introducing beginners to the martial arts. We also have advanced programs for those who have studied the martial arts before and are interested in getting to high levels of ability and long-term growth.

That is why your first experience with us is an introductory process called our New Student Orientation Introductory Program. It involves a Tour of our school, a few Semi-Private Introductory Lessons that might be with other beginners starting off just like yourself or you are welcome to bring someone to get started with you, you receive your new martial arts Student Uniform, and a conference to review our schedule, tuition and answer any questions that you have.

Whether you are an experienced martial artist or a pure novice everyone who enrolls starts out with the New Student Orientation to help introduce you to our school and answer ANY questions you might have while making you feel at ease. This process will allow you to evaluate our martial arts school, our staff, and our instructors. You’ll want to look for a feeling of comfort in areas of professionalism, safety, and if you think we can inspire you and help you accomplish your goals and receive the benefits you are looking for in studying the martial arts with us.

HOW do I Choose a Martial Art School?

Choosing a martial arts school is no different than choosing anything else in life. You must “listen to your gut”, use common sense and make sure you have a good feeling about the school you are “trying out”. We are confident that you will be satisfied and if you are not we are happy to recommend a school that might better suit your needs. It also allows us to evaluate you, the new student applying for membership, to see if you qualify to be a part of our school. Afterwards you get to make the choice whether to enroll or not. There are no “Hard Sales” or “Pressure” to enroll. There are also no “Hidden Expenses” either. It will also give you peace of mind to know that should you need to cancel your membership with our school at any time you may do so.

WHAT Happens WHEN I First Come In? WHO will help ME?

When you first enter The Dojo you will be warmly greeted by our best new student instructor who will help you throughout your New Student Orientation Introductory Program. First after introducing themselves they will give you a quick tour of our school, introduce you to some of the other members and answer any questions you have. Your new student instructor will take the time to discuss your goals and find out what benefits you are looking to receive from studying the martial arts with us. They will also take the time to find out any physical or other limitations you might have and be concerned with. For instance some students who want to enroll might ask “What if I have a preexisting condition or injury such as back pain, neck pain, knee challenges or back challenges”. Your new student instructor will be able to recommend modifications so that you can participate in our program to the best of YOUR ability.

Next you will receive your high quality New Student Martial Arts Uniform compliments of us. New students perform 10 Acts of Kindness, log them on a piece of paper and hand this in to qualify for membership and their complimentary uniform that is theirs to keep whether they enroll or not. New students may then change into their new uniform in our private individual changing rooms such as what one would find in a department store.

WHAT Happens in My First Class?  Is it safe?  Will I look silly?

You’ll have fun! As all along, your New Student Instructor will teach you what to do in your first class. Your first class is one on one with your instructor and there may be a few new students getting started with you. You may also bring a friend or someone else to get started with you as well. First some of the protocol and customs of the martial arts will be explained such as HOW and WHEN to bow and WHY. The bow does not have any religious significance it is merely a customary display of respect for one another or towards training tools that help us as we practice the martial arts. Everything we do is with safety in mind. The martial art lesson will begin with a warm up involving loosening up, light stretching and you’ll be coached on HOW to do each exercise correctly and safely.

The rest of the lesson will consist of learning some simple yet effective martial art techniques. During this first lesson you’ll experience the qualities of the martial arts. The Discipline of staying Focused while executing each technique as you perform each move to the count lead by your New Student Instructor. Your Confidence will grow as you get better at each skill the more you practice it during the class. You’ll gain a fundamental understanding of Self Defense Techniques that really work for personal protection, and you’ll get a light workout and break a sweat which is a good stress relief. You’ll feel like you are on a mini-vacation and the days problems will seem a million miles away as you have fun and enjoy your first martial arts class!

At the end of class you’ll review the skills you just learned as a part of your first test and earn your white belt!

You’ll do great!

WHAT happens in my Second Martial Arts Class?

Your second martial arts class will be scheduled before you leave from you first class. You will already have your martial arts uniform so you’ll want to bring that in with you. Once again you will be greeted by your New Student Instructor who will introduce you to the other new students, the other members involved in our school and the new student instructors. This second class is a group class where you will be working with other new students just like yourself. They might have only up to a few months experience and your class will be separate from the members who have been studying longer. This second class once again is taught at a beginners pace. It will again start with warm up exercises, a review of the techniques and skills you learned in the first class and you’ll be introduced to some new basic martial art techniques. Again you’ll break a sweat and have a FUN class! You’ll finish with some cool down exercises that might consist of light stretching and relaxation breathing.

WHAT happens next? I want to Enroll!

An enrollment conference will be scheduled either after your second class or at a time that is convenient for you to discuss HOW you did with your classes, you’ll find out if you qualify for membership, you’ll receive feedback on your performance and recommendations are made for any improvements you might need, you will also have plenty of time to ask lots of questions. During this conference various areas of membership will be explained such as our class schedule, home practice, registration & tuition and everything you will need to know when becoming a new student of The DOJO! Again there are no “Hard Sales” or “Pressure” to enroll. There are also no “Hidden Expenses” either. At this point you may choose to enroll or not. One thing to ask when enrolling in a martial art school is what happens if for some reason you are unable to continue. What makes our school unique is that we have a trust agreement that simply says “We trust you, and if for some reason you are unable to continue classes you may cancel your membership and tuition by giving us 30 days written notice for free cancellation or immediate cancellation my be opted for a small fee. Another good question is to ask about hidden expenses such as testing fees when advancing to new belt ranks of the martial arts such as gold belt, brown belt or black belt. We have no test fees at our school. At our school you find enrolling will be easy.

WHAT Happens After I Enroll?

After you enroll New Students continue working in the Beginners Class as coordination, experience, know how & confidence in your abilities are built up and it will be sooner than you think! When the New Student is ready they will be invited for gradually getting involved more and more with the other beginner students who moved up from the Basic Class. The intermediate and more advance students are always happy to help and encourage beginners from their first class. Since we are a private school we limit our enrollment to only qualified students. This has created a positive atmosphere of like minded individuals who are motivating, encouraging, safe, inspiring, and makes it the type of place we and our students enjoy returning to for each class.

I have quick report on How to Choose a Martial Art School Featured below.  Any school you choose, this report will help you make the right decision:

So many martial arts schools and so little time! How does one choose the right one? Here are some inside tips to help you to pick the right school – for the right reasons, from Tom Callos, a veteran school owner and consultant to the martial arts industry.

Martial arts schools are everywhere! If you live in the U.S., chances are you have at least one school within a 5-mile radius of your home - and probably more. There are estimated to be more than six million martial arts practitioners in North America, about 70% of those are children. Today’s martial arts schools range from operations that rival the polish and fancy facilities of the nation’s finest health club chains to schools that look like the set of The Last Samurai to down and-dirty “garage dojos.” Price ranges in the martial art industry, according to Frank Silverman, Director of the Martial Arts Industry Association, average out at about $125 per month, but most schools can be found charging anywhere from $35.00 per month to more than $300. How does one go about choosing the right school? Industry expert Tom Callos, a veteran school owner himself, has some great advice on how to choose a martial arts school that’s right for you.

“The first thing to know about choosing a martial arts school is that you already know how to do it,” says Callos.

“You evaluate a martial arts school the same way you would evaluate any school you would take your child to. Just because you’re thinking of joining a school that teaches the “ancient arts of self defense,” doesn’t mean you don’t apply modern day scrutiny to their professionalism, teachers, and facilities.”

Callos asserts that being a black belt, at any level, is not a sign that the wearer is a good teacher or that he or she knows how to run a business. “Just because someone is a good athlete, doesn’t mean they are going to give you your money’s worth when it comes to lessons,” warns Callos. “Parents should use their good judgment when choosing a school, as just like in the martial arts, there aren’t really any secrets, it’s all about mastering the fundamentals. If you’re looking for a good school, look for one that’s proficient at the fundamentals of customer service.”

Read our nine tips:
Callos offers nine other school-hunting tips:

The Facility

Just like any business, the way the facility looks and its cleanliness (or lack thereof) says something about the attitude and aptitude of the owner. A martial arts school doesn’t have to look like a Starbucks, but it ought to be clean and organized. If a school doesn’t look professional, chances are it isn’t.

The Staff

Just like you would expect from any business, the staff of a martial arts school should be courteous, professional, and personable. They should treat you (and/or your child) like a paying customer. If you can go to a department store and get better service than you can at your local martial arts school, then spend your money at the department store.

The Attitude

Bad attitude = bad school; if you get a weird feeling, a sort of “attitude” from the staff or owner that rubs you the wrong way, then you shouldn’t become a customer of that school. If the attitude of the owner is superb and his or her staff exhibits a similar attitude, then you’ve found a school worth a second look.

The Style

When shopping for a martial arts school, the “style” the school teaches is secondary to who teaches the classes and how they teach them. A good instructor will make you feel good about what you’re doing. He or she will help you stay healthy and take an interest in why you’ve joined the school. If you’re a complete novice to the martial arts, don’t shop for a style or method, shop for the best teacher or teachers (read: the best people) you can find. Find the right teacher and you’ll love the martial arts. Find the wrong teacher and it won’t matter what style they teach.

The Students

Lots of intermediate and advanced students in classes? Chances are you’ve found a school that knows how to enroll and keep its students; that’s a good sign. If you go to a school that’s been in business for a year or longer and it’s still empty, something’s not right with the school. Most martial arts teachers think their classes are the best classes - the way that most restaurateurs think that their food is the best food. If the parking lot is empty, it’s a sign that the customers have a different opinion.

The Financial Arrangements

Many martial arts schools will ask you to sign a contract for a certain number of lessons and/or for a certain amount of time – and that’s ok, as a school has to sell its wares and generate cash flow just like any other business. You shouldn’t think twice about signing a contract with a school, under the following conditions: 1. You’ve had adequate time to witness and experience the service the school provides. Most schools have a great sales pitch, but some aren’t able to follow through with the level of service they promise. Nine out of 10 schools will allow you to try a month of lessons, for a price, before you agree to enroll for a certain number of classes or months. If you can’t negotiate this trial period, it’s a definite red flag. Bonus Tip: Most schools will have a Pay In Full option on membership. It’s ok to pay for your membership in full, but make sure you know the school thoroughly before doing so. Most schools will have a no-refund policy.

2. The contract you sign should spell out, clearly and exactly, how you leave the program should you have to leave or if you become dissatisfied with the service. It’s ok to pay a little exit fee or some other penalty should you decide to leave before fulfilling the terms of a contract, but the penalty or penalties shouldn’t be unreasonable (and some are, so check carefully). Nine out of 10 schools will, if you insist, write a special “exit clause” on your contract spelling out the terms of your departure and they will also be willing to strike out parts of a contract if you don’t feel comfortable with the verbiage. Bonus Tip: The way the owner or staff member treats you should you try to negotiate a trial period or a change in the school’s contract will give you a very clear idea of what the school’s service is really like, after the sale. If you’re not treated with respect, go elsewhere.

The Service

There’s service, then there’s good service, and then there’s excellent service. Just because the owner or staff member of a martial arts school has the ability to make you beg for mercy with his or her baby toe, doesn’t mean they have the right provide you with anything but the best service they can muster. If you visit a martial arts school and you don’t see or feel a reasonably high level of customer service happening, raise that suspicious eyebrow, step back a bit, and do some further analysis.

The Feeling You Get When You’re There and When You LeaveAre you having fun? Do you leave the school feeling empowered and taken care of? If you go to a martial arts school and leave feeling better than when you arrived, you’ve found a good thing.

Your Gut Instinct
Always go with your gut instinct when choosing a school or instructor. If your intuition says something’s not right, something’s not right. If you’ve found a good school, you’ll know it (especially if you’ve read this article).

Cureently we are runing TheDOJO Food Drive which raises food for people in need in our community, we have collected and donated over 30,000 cans of food over the past 13 years.  Community service projects demonstrate the mindset of our students as people who make a difference.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Your Gut Instinct
Always go with your gut instinct when choosing a school or instructor. If your intuition says something’s not right, something’s not right. If you’ve found a good school, you’ll know it.

All in all actions speak louder than words, take a trial class or two, talk with other students or parents, do your research online and look at the things from a common sense point of view.  For instance if you want to get in shape but the instructors are anything but fit, make sure the words of the instructors are congruent with their actions.  SOme can put on a well polished veneer of excellence only to have their actions say otherwise, usually found out over time.
