About Maria
Since I've had knowlege to share, I've passed it along.
I learned to teach as a gymnastic coach and transfered that into academia, from introducing middle schoolers to computer science (java) to tutoring 7-11th graders in math concepts (algebra and calculus) to TAing for undergradate college computer science classes (java, C, C++, python).
I focus on understanding. By teaching the student to think logically about the problems and guiding them to understand the concepts through questions, we can get past the copying examples and trying to fit the homework solutions to these examples.
I strongly believe in the power of asking for help and receiving guidance, and mentoring the whole person not just the academic brain.
I love meeting new students and helping them conquer something they did not think they would understand.

I always start with my expectations of the student and of myself. Then we can explore what learning style works best for the student. Do they want to ask questions until they understand? Do they need to work through examples or concepts with another person? There are many ways to approach learning and first I find the way that fits the student.
