About Mia

Hello! My name is Mia Walsh. Im a current Whitman student with 2 years of experience tutoring math with kids k-12. I am familiar with common core and math through Calculus III. I have also tutored math over the phone for a call center called homework hotline, so I'm familiar with the style of explenation required to teach math long distance.

I want to be a math techer after college, so I've always helped my friends out with their math, but when I got to college 2 years ago I had my first paid tutoring job teaching highschoolers.

I worked for Homework Hotline, an over-the-phone only tutoring call center for a year and a half.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I first ask for their textbook/syllabus so I can get an idea of what they're learning. Then, depending on a kids interests I try to form a lesson plan that will at the least get a kid laughing over the problems, to try and make them less intimidating. Then I'll ask the kid to tell me what they know about the topic or I'll ask them to solve as far as they can into a problem before they get stuck. From there I answer their questions/help them get unstuck by trying to find at least a couple explenations for a problem that the student understands. I repeat this process till I feel the student has truely learned a concept.

I have worked with pretty much everyone. For paid work, I have tutored at least a couple kids in each grade k-12. I also work as a volunteer math tutor for college math through complex analysis.

Find a math tutor that works well with your brain. The great thing about math is that there are tons of different ways to approach a problem and get a right answer. If you meet with a tutor a couple times and their explenations aren't helping you, find another! There are enough math tutors to find one whose mathematical intuition matches yours.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Id say, dont stress too much about perfectly articulating your needs. Often when we're most confused it's cause we cant figure out what our needs are. I think its part of the tutors job to be able to identify their students needs. That being said, if there is something you know helps you learn definately communicate it!
