About Rick

As a Middle School teacher for 28 years, I enjoy making math fun while helping them to understand the lesson. With fun examples and guided practice, my goal is to empower students to be more confidant in their math skills and improve their ability to do the math.

I am an Instructional II certified secondary mathematics teacher in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a Google Education Certified Educator, and recipient of the Pennsylvania CAPE Teacher of the Year and Diocese of Pittsburgh Golden Apple Award.

As an educator who is committed to each student's well-being, I have been vaccinated against the Covid-19 virus and always wear a mask when working in close contact with my students. I also offer online tutoring if you prefer.

With so many great teachers who helped me through the years, I wanted to find a way to give back to others what I received from those teachers.

I attended Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, and received a B.A. in Mathematics. I have an Instructional II certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I have completed the National Teacher Exam for Mathematics and the Praxis exam for Middle School Science. For the past 28 years, I have taught Middle School math including 6th-grade Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry. I have also taught Earth & Space Science, Life Science, and Physical Science for 23 years.

About the lesson

When I first meet a new student, I like to talk with them about their successes and struggles in the classroom, discuss the reasons they feel that they need tutoring, discover any expectations that their classroom teacher may have, and get to know them a little.

Throughout my career, I have mostly worked with Middle School students from 6th - 8th grade. But with four grown boys of my own, I have also worked with them through their high school years. As an Assistant Scoutmaster, I have worked with boys from 5th - 12th grade.

You should meet with the teacher and see if you make a good connection with them. Just like making friends with other students at school, you will do better with some tutors than you might with others.

When visiting Walt Disney World, I was so impressed with how nice all of the employees were and how they always wanted to make sure they did all they could to have your visit magical!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Have I been putting my best foot forward? Have I actively participated in class? Do I ask questions or ask for clarification when I don't completely understand? Am I taking good notes to help me when I go to do my homework?
