About Charles

Hi I'm Charles Scott and I'm a freshman Mechanical Engineering major at UCLA. For the past two-and-a-half years I have been tutoring K-12 students in all levels of mathematics.

In every math class I've been in since elementary school, there have been some frustrated students who, though they try their hardest, cannot seem grasp the material. In my experience, the reason for that is almost always lack of communication with the teacher. Teachers have 20-40 kids in their room at any given time so it can be hard to give each student the time and attention that they require for proper learning. My goal as a tutor is to bridge that communication gap. I do that by first establishing what the student is comfortable with regarding a given concept and then work up from there so that the student not only knows what to do in a particular situation but also has an understanding of why they are doing it. The 1-on-1 interaction lets me ensure that the student is following everything that I am doing and allows for the student to raise concerns whenever necessary.

Qualifications:

- Back-to-back recipient of my high school's STEM Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics (for Pre-Calculus Honors in 11th grade and AP Calculus B/C in 12th grade)

- High School Valedicatorian

- AP Scholar w/ Distinction

- Perfect score on the ACT and on the SAT Math II Subject Test

High School/College Math Courses I've Taken (A's in all):

Algebra I and II Honors, Geometry Honors, Pre-Calculus Honors, AP Calculus B/C, Multivariable Calculus, and Linear Algebra (taking currently)

One of the reasons I fell in love with math at an early age is that it always works. I found solace in the fact that as long as I did the right set of operations, I would come up with the right answer no matter what. That is because the mathematical rules we follow were not written by any woman or man, but by the universe. All humans did was discover those rules through observation and clever thinking. For that reason, I believe that any student can learn math as long as they have a desire to learn and have a teacher willing to give them the time that they need.

I started tutoring students in math at the beginning of my junior year in high school when my friends needed help preparing for a pre-calculus test. I taught them everything they needed to know and when the next test came around they asked me for help again. I began tutoring them before every test and soon enough my other peers were asking me for help. I put my name on my school's tutoring list and started tutoring every grade level in math. I continued to tutor and gain more clients throughout my senior year. I began tutoring online once I began my freshman year of college.

I have been in the most advanced mathematics classes offered for middle school and high school and I am currently a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate at UCLA learning advanced mathematics.
