About Logan
My goal in tutoring is not just to teach a particular concept or to improve your test scores (though these will happen); I want students to become passionate and interested in learning and will introduce them to opportunities that help them achieve their academic goals. I have experience successfully navigating the college admissions and application process to earn a full-ride scholarship (the Eugene McDermott Scholarship) worth over $250,000 and outside of my tutoring on particular concepts can help you to understand how you can maximize your chances of winning similar opportunities.
Firstly, I was fortunate enough to receive a full ride scholarship based purely on my academic success that paid me a stipend on top of covering all expenses and also introduced me to an amazing cohort of people. Even applying to this scholarship requiremenst, and I want to help others get an understanding of and shot at the same type of opportunity I was lucky enough to get.
I also love helping others learn and have made it part of my mission to put students from disadvantaged backgrounds on equal footing. Outside of this website I work some with personal connections and do 25% of my tutoring pro-bono to support students who cannot afford a paid service, so my enrollments here help support that time.
I first started teaching as a test prep specialist for university students (in Germany and the Netherlands), helping them prepare for the SAT & ACT as they lacked access to the same resources as many students in the United States. I loved being able to help put people on an equal footing and what to take what I learned through that and use it to help even more students!
Eugene McDermott Scholar. National Merit Scholar. President's Scholar Semi-finalist. Top 3% University of Waterloo Math Competition. UTD Calculus Bowl Competitor. Captain of Academic Bowl. B.S. Mechanical Engineering. 1590/1600 SAT. 35 ACT. National AP Scholar.

The process depends on your goals. If you are looking for a single session/help with a particular concept we can simply go straight to a session explaining that concept and work through problems together to identify and correct the gap in knowledge that is causing difficulty.
If you are looking for a longer term engagement or general help (say improving a standardized test score) then I'll first ask you to create a list of your study goals, to complete a diagnostic test and to let me know what sort of time frame you are working on. In the first session we will dive a little deeper into the results of the diagnostic and identify the concepts that we should focus on, and the order in which to do so. After the first session I'll generate a study plan for us to follow and we will go through it, adjusting each week as necessary.
I do not provide weekly schedules, all study plans are based on milestones as it is critical to frame progress in terms of understanding of concepts, not by time spent studying.
I work primarily with high school age students but am happy to work with students of any age and experiene level, math is still math!
The best teacher for you depends on your goal. For example, if you are preparing for standardized tests it helps to have someone that has more recently gone through the test taking process, or recently taken a similar test. Test prep is much different than general practice (i.e. learning a specific concept), as your goals and methods applied will vary significantly from the goals of test prep. You will want someone who has demonstrated success
I enjoyed reading about recent progress on the Riemann hypothesis and LIGO's measurements of gravitational waves. I'm also a huge NBA fan and enjoyed watching the Lakers become relevant again this season, though I'm missing the playoffs.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The most important things to know are your learning goals and how much time you are able to commit. Also I've found that it is often more than just studying that is needed to make the changes people want to see; think about your goals, how you are achieving them and how you spend your time. Also if you are registering for tutoring because someone else wants you to then it will not work well. Talk to me and I can tell you why EVERYONE can benefit from one-on-one tutoring; it's the best way to learn and the best use of your time (if you get the right tutor).
