About Jonathan

For several years I’ve provided high-quality tutoring, ranging from arithmetic all the way to differential equations. I always ensure that I’m able to provide students with an individualized approach. Because of my own recent experiences with various SAT and AP tests, I’m able to provide on-the-ground tactics about what’s important, as well as approaches for learning various subject matters that worked well for me and other students I have tutored.

I think tutoring is a very important process because it can be hard to get a lot of one-on-one time in a traditional educational setting. As a result, students can often feel that they aren’t learning in a way that they understand. I enjoy tutoring because I think education is the most important universally prized commodity you can have, and I think it’s really central that people have this opportunity to open as many doors as possible. In addition, I just enjoy this material, both when I learned it and whenever I teach it, and I hope that you might find some of my enthusiasm for the subject infectious!

I began as a Teaching Assistant for Multivariable Calculus, providing weekly tutoring sessions and hosting exam review sessions where we worked through different problems before each exam. From there I started to tutor other mathematics courses, and then expanded to SAT tutoring as well.

I received high A’s in all my math subjects up to and including single and multivariate calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and real and complex analysis. I received a 1590 on my SAT, with a perfect Math score, as well as 800s in my SAT Math II and Physics tests. I’ve tutored complex math in the past, and have worked as a Mathnasium tutor for students from 1st grade through calculus.

We’ll spend a few minutes getting to know each other at the start of the session, and I might ask what topics you feel less comfortable with, or what you’d like to work on. If you’re bringing in homework that can be viewed electronically, we’ll work through it first theoretically and then systematically, or if you’re an SAT student we’ll jump right into one of the practice tests so that you can get a sense of my teaching style and I can identify what to focus on as we move forward.

I’ve helped reluctant students gain or regain interest in their schoolwork, and excited students to learn even more and even more quickly; students that are frustrated with a subject to view it from a new angle, and bored students to realize how important it is.

It’s important to think about what you find difficult, whether it’s memorizing certain theorems, understanding what you’re doing, or trying multiple approaches before finding the correct one. Some things can be learned, but it’s not always enough to just learn it, because sometimes you need to work at it until it comes to you fluidly whenever you need it, becoming part of who you are. Which is to say, you can always be taught at, and that’s the technique a lot of teachers eventually use, but the best results come from when you’re willing to learn.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would think about, what do I feel least confident about? Some concepts you may not understand at all, while some concepts just require increased speed, so it’s important to consider where you think you’re at. Generally we’ll work through the former type earlier in the process, and then progress towards increased confidence once you feel comfortable with the material. In addition, some people prefer to simply memorize techniques and apply them, while other people perform better when they understand them intuitively. Knowing which format you prefer can help me personalize my tutoring style and ensure that you get the most possible out of your sessions.
