About Julie
I primarily tutor SATs, ACTs, ISEEs and SSATs. I cover all subjects on each exam, and employ a holistic method to combat test anxiety. I believe that tutoring should be a short and focused experience that boosts a student's confidence in their own abilities, particularly in the realm of college prep. In addition to SAT and ACT, I assist students with college applications and essays and work with younger students on math, reading, and grammar skills.
I love learning how each of my students learn. I love seeing the satisfaction when a student understands a difficult concept. I love when my students move on to college, and I know I've done my part to make them better writers, more confident in math, and ready to excel in college.
I have always taught. It comes as naturally to me as breathing. Even in high school, I occasionally student-taught. As early as college, I was leading classes of my own or working one-on-one with developmentally disabled kids. I've taught acting, literature, math, SAT and ACT, SHSAT, ISEE and SSAT, reading comprehension, essay writing, Shakespeare, and even voice & speech for actors.
I've spent over ten years preparing students for college. Before I taught SAT and ACT, I worked with students with developmental and learning disabilities. These years have informed my work to a large degree, as I believe that every student learns differently and sees these tests differently. I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in Social Work, which has deepened the highly individualized work I do with students.

I engage in a diagnostic process when I first start with a new student. Together, we explore both the SAT and ACT to get a feel for which test may suit the student better. While we work, I get an impression of how the student learns and form my plan for our time together.
Every type. I have worked extensively with students with learning differences, anxiety disorders, and ADHD. I also regularly tutor highly competitive students looking to enter Ivy League schools.
Don't hire a tutor who scares you about the test when you first speak. The tutor's role is to support and help you make your own way, not convince you that you need a tutor. Maybe you do. Maybe you don't. Tutors should make the process less scary, not more anxiety-provoking.

Julie tutored 2 of my children for the SAT and the ACT. They are wildly different students and learners and she managed to help them both score in the highest percentiles for both tests. She is kind and patient and well as motivating and smart. I have recommended her to several friends who have loved working with her as well. I would recommend her without reservation.
I really loved how calming Julie was throughout the whole process. The ACT is stressful, but she divided it into chunks that felt workable. Every time we covered a new concept, she drilled it until I totally had it. Not only did my math get much better for the ACT, I started doing better in my math class at school. I just got my score back, and I'm so happy!
