About Luca

I am a recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh, having just graduated in April 2020 with a degree in Actuarial Mathematics. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the start date for my job as an Acuarial Analyst has been pushed back to the end of summer, leaving me in need of work during the pandemic.

If no where else, you can find a guarantee of my passion for mathematics (and more importantly for teaching mathematics) in the fact that this was the first option I turned to. Over the years I have assisted multiple friends and family members in multiple mathematical diciplines (be it Alegbra, Caluclus, Statistics, Geometry, etc...), and doing so I have found that I truly enjoy teaching this subject that I love (don't worry, I understand why you don't love it).

This is of course my own perception in the manner, but I would claim that I bring a very healthy balance of patience, sociability, professionalism, and expertise to any of our sessions. Furthrermore, as a result of both a lack of anything to do during quarantine and my genuine interest in all things mathematics, I can guarantee a 100% dedication of however much of my time is necessary to bring you to the proficiency that you may seek, and perhaps bring you to a headspace where you no longer cringe at the word 'math'.

I have unfortunately never tutored professionally before, however I am confident that I will be able to fully service your needs through my general expertise in Highschool and College level mathematics, and my full dedication to providing you with the best service possible!

I'm one of those nerds that will often say that math is everywhere. Everything we do and already understand is governed by underlying functions and processes, and this is the stuff that mathematics exists to describe. A lot of it is complicated and reserved for those who really want to torture themselves, but subjects such as Calculus or Statistics hold this same fascination, without being excessively complicated.

I recognize that these subjects aren't for everyone, and some minds are more predisposed to really understand mathematics than others. However wether it's for a class you have to take for school, or if you need to learn one of these subjects for a job you need, I will always, with unending patience (and understanding, trust me), enjoy sharing my fascination with mathematics to anyone bogged down in it.

I am a graduate of the mathemtics department of Pitt, where I took classes ranging from multi-variable calculus and differential equations to mathematical probability and high level statistics. Throughout these classes I have become extremely well versed in general Algebra, Calculus, Statistics, and Geometry.

About the lesson

The first steps I always take are to find out what the student already understands, and (more importantly) what they don't. This isn't always all that difficult to learn, as the problems the student is currently having tend to answer these questions for me.

Something that is also very important but more subtle, I will guage how the student approaches problems and other material. This will allow me to understand how best to explain more difficult concepts, and will help me find the correct perspective from which the student can look at the material and watch something difficult become easy.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
In math there are generally two ways to find a solution to a problem. Either:

You can memorize the formulas and steps needed in order to find the solution, then use that to solve the problem...or,

You can develop a fundamental undurstanding of how the concepts in the probelm work, with which you can then generally intuit the formulas and steps to the soltuion without any memorization neeeded.

Expressing your preferences between these two to your teacher will often help them find the best way to help you meet your needs.
