About RW

We provide an approach to math which is insight based and in no way relies on authority or memorization. Students are both expected to think and make decisions for themselves and desire to know what they are doing. Our staff are research mathematicians with PhD's in math who have a strong desire to make real understanding of mathematics from the ground up, available to everyone. We present math as a friendly subject and urge the student to feel completely at ease. There are no stupid mathematical questions and admission of ignorance is greatly encouraged. Our staff can build a subject up right from its axioms and do so repeatedly until the student sees that there is sense in what is being learned. Further the students need not assent to what they do not understand. No why questions will be turned away. We feel and uphold the passion of the scientific attitude and the value of truth that lies beyond human opinion and we make no appologies for this.

We enjoy teaching a subject that speaks with its own voice and stands on its own feet. It is wonderful when a student sees this and realizes mathematics is a powerful ally that can engender self confidence and inner certainty that no amount of harrassment can shake. Our staff are involved in ongoing research and we communicate the accompanying attitude and feeling to our students. Mathematics is the only science that is truly infinite in its potential and forms the gateway to serious work in the precise sciences. When one teaches math one shares the process of discovery with the student. This is certainly one of the most enjoyable aspects of math teaching. Related to it is the moment a student begins to argue his or her own opinion using the logic and theorems learned. The fierce independence of spirit engendered by a real connection to the subject is something of great value and a real pleasure for the teacher when it springs up.
