About Connor

I like to teach things not only through repetition, but through conceptual reduction. Something I've noticed with many of my own teachers is that so much education is based solely on repetition, which is necessary but insufficient. It doesn't matter how many times someone practices factoring polynomials, the skill won't stick if they don't understand what they're doing. I find it greatly satisfying for a student to have that eureka moment, after which both a concept and its written execution become a permanent addition to their knowledge base.

Not only do I enjoy teaching things to my students, I like to instill in them the processes of thinking that lead them to those eureka moments without help. Learning is a lifelong process, and it's not confined to the subjects taught in a high school classroom.

I am fluent in Mandarin, so if there is a language barrier that needs scaling, I'm your guy.

I have unofficially tutored many people on a variety of subjects in the past. More recently, I have been teaching boxing to students in Rowland Heights. Passing on knowledge is just something I find joy in.

Being a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, I have substantial experience working with data and statistical analyses. To do such work, a strong understanding of basic alegebra and arithmetic is required. I often find myself conceptualizing the operations I am executing on a set of data so that I'm not just putting numbers into a formula to have answers spit back at me. This method of understanding mathematics, and indeed any domain of study, is extremely benefiecial in elevating one's thinking abilities.

Though I don't have any formal degree in English or writing, I spend much of my free time studying the great thinkers of old and formulating my own system of ideas. As I find a great deal of enjoyment in writing these systems down, I have learned that linguistic accuracy is paramount to preserving the intricate details of one's musings. Through much practice, I believe I have honed my English and writing abilities to a proficient level. I've also been praised on my sense of prose by professors many times in the past (not to brag, but hey, it gets potential students interested).

First, I get to know the student and develop a friendship with them. I believe education is greatly facilitated by an amicable relationship between student and teacher.

Then, I identify the student's problem area. Whether it is trouble with understanding an idea or a struggle to expand their thinking, I develop a personalized way to help the student overcome the obstacle. Few teaching methods apply to every student, and I think one of a teacher's best assets is the ability to adapt to the one at hand.

I have tutored primarily first and second generation Asian-Americans, but that's just a result of the environment I'm in. I am more than happy to work with any student.

I recently finished my undergraduate studies at UC Riverside, completing a Bachelor's of Science program in Psychology and a minor in Economics. The time really does fly by like people say.
