About Deanna
When I think about my role as a teacher, the one thing that I constantly have focused on is the relationships that I have built with my students. I enjoy having conversations with them on subjects and issues that are important to them, and learning how they are dealing with and experiencing the world and the material we are studying in class. I strive to maintain my classroom as less of a class and more of a community, where we are all sharing ideas and communicating and learning from one another at the same time. I have a very firm belief that young people have the ability to make great changes in the world if they are given the right information and tools. I challenge my students to reach their goals in life by providing them with the tools to better communicate with society and the world.
To foster learning in the best way possible, the teacher needs to be enthusiastic about the material being studied, even when her students are not. She is the coach and the cheerleader, highlighting the positives about each of her students’ work with sincerity, coupled with constructive criticism. She must always be open to diversity, the varying degrees of ideas and opinions, and must be willing to set and enforce the classroom standards so that her students can be respectful and trusting of one another. She must always be willing to listen, even compromise, but be firm in her decisions and faithful to her promises. A teacher is a lifelong learner, she must continue to build her wealth of professional knowledge, attending workshops or conferences with fellow cohorts to deliver her students with the most up-to-date information possible.

I believe that a good relationship between a student and a teacher is built upon a strong foundation of mutual understanding, respect, and trust. To effectively assess students’ wants and needs, the teacher must first understand her students and where they are coming from. The teacher is the first to open the doors of good communication. She must also be willing to communicate her expectations to the class; having a sincere attitude toward her students and showing concern for both their classwork and their lives is imperative. Both teachers and students seek and deserve respect as human beings and as individuals. Teachers undoubtedly seek respect in the professional sense but must be careful how they go about it. As a teacher, I will be in a position of authority, but will never assume the persona of a tyrannical authoritarian. This position also provides me with the opportunity to be a mentor or an advisor.
