About Laura
I am an Elementry school teacher. I have teaching experience across several grade levels. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina. I have a New Jersey license to teach K - 6th grades. My passion is to teach math and science. However, I also enjoy teaching reading, writing, and social studies.
I am very positive and encourage students to do their best at their own pace and level. I individulaize lessons and assignments based student's needs and abilities. I do a variety of types of assignments and lessons including hands on activities, practice sheets, computer work, and games. This helps to adapt toe ach child's own learning style.
I have recently moved to New Jersey from North Carolina, where I taught 5th grade. In my transition to a new state, I am currently a substitute teacher for Elementary classrooms.
I look forward to working with you and your child in helping to enhance their skills and further their education.
I have always enjoyed teaching other people. When I was young I had thought about being a teacher and as I went to college I explored other careers, but always came back to education.
I practiced teaching my younger cousins, I taught them their ABC's, numbers, and basic phrases in Japanese and Sign Language. I helped my cousing with Summer School when I went to visit for the summer. She allowed me to help with lesson planning, teaching, crafts, etc. I also explored possibilities while in Japan for a couple of months over the summer in High School. I assisted teacher's with English lessons both in the high school and at an after school tutoring program. All this helped me realize that education was my true calling.
I worked in North Carolina as a 5th grade teacher. I taught all subjetcs to a variety of students who had diverse backgrounds in education, abilities, and personal lives.
I was recently a long term substitute (about 6 months) in a Kindergarten classroom. I contniue to be a substitute in a variety of other Elemementary classrooms.

When gaining a new student, I like to talk to them and discuss what they feel their strengths and weaknesses. I create a rapport with them to help them feel comfortable with me. I strongly believe if students do not like their teacher/tutor, they will not respond to the lessons and will not progress.
I also like to use a few assessments to find where the student needs are and use the data I find to create individualized lessons that will best meet the student's needs.
I have worked with a variety of students. I have worked with your "typical" students who are able to complete their skills lessons with little to no assistance and with students who are several grade levels behind that need a lot of extra support. I have worked with students with behavioral needs, medical needs, Engligh Language Learners, students with ADHD, and student's with learning disabillities.
I would tell the student to find a teacher who they get along with and who can adapt to their style of learning. I would also suggest to find a teacher who uses a variety of teaching styles to help them focused and interested in what they are learning.
I recently had a kindergarten student who was below grade level and struggling to blend letter sounds together to make words. She was an English Language Learner. Her parens spoke both English and their native language, which made it more difficult for her to understand and hear the sounds properlt. After working with the student for several months, on letter and number identity, letter sounds, blending, and creative writing (writing sounds you hear), she met all grade level standards and was even slightly above grade level in some areas.
Not only did she reach all her educational goals, but she became more confident at school, which bettered her social skills. She was more outgoing and was willing to participate in whole class lessons, without fear of giving the wrong answer. She became social with the other students and was always willing to help out the in the classroom.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Have students come up with a list of their strengths and weaknesses. What areas do they want to imporove on or think they need the most assistance with?
Also, try to find where they actually need help. Don't just say math or their multiplication tables. Be more specific. Maybe your biggest weakness is multplying by 6, 7, 8, and 12 and not all multiplication tables. This will allow more time to focus on area of needs and not cause frustration by repeating areas you are already comfortable with.
