About Alyssa

Speech and Language with Miss Fisher is devoted to helping Preschool students, Elementary students, and Middle school students who struggle with reading, writting, grammar, reading comprehension, and speech difficulties.

Miss Alyssa Fisher is a New York State Certified Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities, and certified as a Speech and Language Patholgist with the American Speech Langauge and Hearing Association (ASHA). She received her master's degree in Communicated Sciences and Disorders from New York University (NYU), and has been working with children of all ages for 8+ years.

There is nothing better than when a child has that "aha" moment when they finally understand something that they have been struggling with for sometime. Even though it's bittersweet, I love it when my students graduate from sessions with me and no longer need my help.

I have a bachelors degree in Human Development, and a Master's degree in Communicative Sciences and Disorders. My school year job is as a school based NYS lisenced speech pathologist. I have training working with special needs children, children on the spectrum, and medically complex children. I've worked with children from birth to high school.

About the lesson

For a new student, building rapport is the first step. Children are not willing to open up and work with you if they are shy, uncomfortable and unfamiliar with a new adult --- nor should they! I use my first session or two getting students comfortable with me by playing games, and talking about our likes and dislike (I love harry potter, but hate onions!). During this time, I'm using my clinical expertise to informally evaluate your child (language, grammar, etc). During the following sessions I talk with them about which areas they struggle in and which areas they excell...I follow this with some nonstandarized tests and take sample to determine baseline. After that, our sessions are all about improving those areas where they struggle. I use a variety of materials including: fiction stories, non fiction stories, videos, and games. I try to end each session on a positive note by playing a game of the child's choice as a reward for hard work.
