About Casey
My name is Casey Kilburn and I am the founder and creator of Roped in Reading. I am a former classroom teacher, now specializing in online tutoring for students needing reading support.
I am an IMSE Certified Orton-Gillingham Instructor, and a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist from the International Dyslexia Association. I can’t wait to support you and your child!
I have been an educator for the past 8+ years and I am passionate about supporting students in their Literacy journey. I firmly believe every child deserves high-quality, research based reading instruction. I support students online across the United States and around the world. In every lesson, I include the following essential components: strong connection/relationship; implement sequential, research based instruction; engage with games and movement; encourage creative outlets; and incorporate multi-sensory methods.
I aim to do my part in ensuring every child has access to research-based reading intervention that meets their specific needs. When working with your child, I always put a large focus on building relationships and getting to know each of my students and families personally. With a strong teacher-student relationship, I find students have more academic success and it makes those successes all the more powerful!
I am so excited to learn more about you and your child!
My first teaching role was teaching 2nd grade at bilingual schools in Honduras and Mexico for two years. After this, I completed my teacher residency program and obtained my teaching license. Since then, I have worked with students from Pk-8th grade in Washington, D.C. I have become very passionate about equity in literacy and made the transition out of the classroom to become a full-time online tutor reading tutor. I support students across the US and Cananda using Orton Gillingham/Science of Reading aligned practices.
I am a certified Dyslexia Reading Specialist and Orton-Gillingham tutor and have my license in Elementary Education and ESOL/ELL. I have worked with elementary and middle school students for the past 8 years in a variety of school and online settings.

The first thing I always focus on with any new student is building the relationship and getting to know each other, along with setting expectations in a fun and understandable way. I begin with "get to know you" activites and always get an understanding of some baseline academic and social aspects of a new student. Next, I complete formal assessments to guide our starting benchmark and ot create a plan of success moving forward.
I have worked with English Language Learners; students with dyslexia and a variety of learning differences; students with IEP'S; students with 504's and students with special needs.
I would tell them to first look to see if they have qualifications/experience working with other students/subjects that you need support in. After that has been verified, I would make sure that the relationship/connection with the tutor is one that makes you feel safe, respected and supported.
I was able to attend a soccer game of one of my previous students. I worked with him in 2nd and 3rd grade and he is a huge fan of soccer. It was amazing to see him in his happy space and so confident. He also got to meet and fall in love with my fur baby!

Casey has been working with my son Jacob, who has dyslexia. Before finding Casey we worked with two other reading specialists, and to be honest, he hated reading tutoring and it became a struggle to get him to go. Jacob doesn't love reading, so feeling connected with his teachers is important to finding meaning and motivation to practice. Casey takes the time to know Jacob, shares in his interests, and works with us to find ways to help Jacob engage with and enjoy his reading sessions with her. She weaves personal connection, good humor, playfulness, and patience, and his interests into high-quality reading instruction and practice, and we have seen so much growth in Jacob's skills, which has supported him in school and in reading for joy. We have also seen a huge shift in his willingness to show up and put in the practice, even on days that are a challenge. Thank you, Casey!
We truly got so lucky in finding Casey! She has been working with our oldest daughter, who has dyslexia and ADHD, for about 8 months now, and soon after we added sessions for our youngest daughter. We only wish we could have found her sooner!!
Our girls look forward to each of their sessions with Casey. She is highly skilled at what she does and has each session planned out perfectly. Her classes are packed with a sequence of multisensory activities and drills that make learning and mastering skills feel like fun for them.
My daughter went from feeling defeated before starting with Casey to feeling empowered as she has proven to herself that, with the right tools and instruction, she could absolutely learn to read!
Casey has also taught me so much! I feel better equipped to support my girls in their learning after all the feedback, techniques, and knowledge she has shared with me.
We are forever grateful for Casey! Our family feels so lucky to have found Casey. She is an excellent tutor, who has taken a structured and methodical approach to Orton-Gillingham tutoring, but managed to make it fun and engaging for our child. Casey come to every session prepared and with a variety of tasks and methods up her sleeve to switch things up if our child starts to get distracted or feels discouraged. Importantly, she has really made a connection with our daughter and partnered with us in helping building our child's confidence. We can definitely see the results.
My son (7 yo) was nervous about working with a tutor, but Casey made him feel safe and unjudged- he loves working with her and it isn't a fight to get him to do his tutoring sessions! He is gaining confidence and even breaking words down into their phonetic composition in conversations ("hey mom, did you know that 'taxi' has an 'x' in it- [sounds it out]"). Casey has been a great fit for him and I know we will continue to see their work together pay off.
Casey always comes prepared for my daughter's lessons. She is fully equipped with the lesson of the day and it is planned with great consideration for where my daughter is in the learning process. My daughter also has dyslexia and Casey enhances her learning by providing tactile and kinesthetic tools. Most importantly, Casey is kind, patient and motivates my daughter by simply being herself.
Casey is well-trained, invested in my child's growth and development and is kind. I am lucky to know her and have her in my daughter's learning journey.View more recommendations
