About Sophie

My name is Sophie Jane and I have an MA in Novel Writing. I, therefore, spend much of my time writing and reading, as well as teaching creative writing and editing and proofreading novels for clients. I also teach English as a second language, and tutor English Literature to exam students.

About the lesson

It is important to me that learning about creative writing is an enjoyable and exciting experience. Together we can work on your writing skills - everything from style, flow, grammar, research, editing, writing exercises, discussion topics, and more.

A general overview of a full course would be:
- Decide what type of novel or short story you want to write
- Learn how to develop or evolve your plot
- Learn how to create realistic, three-dimensional characters
- Learn how to compose memorable settings and world building
- Learn about authenticity and verisimilitude in writing
- Obtain a deeper understanding of how to write dialogue
- Develop editing skills for rewrites
- Gain some understanding of the world of publishing
- Develop your ideas through writing and discussion exercises
- Complete exercises that will help you think about aspects of your novel that you haven't thought of before

These are broadly the topics that we can cover, but each class is tailored to each individual student, and we can focus on what you are most interested in learning.

I have an MA in Novel Writing from Middlesex University London. I have also been proofreading and editing clients' novels for 4 years.

I teach creative writing to people of all ages and will adapt classes accordingly. Kids, teens, and adults are welcome in my classes. Our lessons together will typically be one hour in length, but if you wish we can double book, book full days/workshops, or set up multiple lessons. Whatever you need.

Sophie is an exceptional editor with such a natural instinct for the craft of writing and story telling. Her passion for my work has been so inspiring. I can’t imagine writing a draft without sharing it with Sophie. Her optimism and keen eye for detail makes the process so easy and rewarding.

Sophie and I trained as teachers together and from day one she has shown that she is a gifted educator. She has a very gentle and caring way with all her students and she creates such a calm atmosphere in her classes. I am still learning so much from Sophie, even after all these years, and I know that her students have all come on leaps and bounds because of her. Any organisation would be lucky to have her work for them and any student equally lucky to learn from her.

I did my CELTA course with Sophie a few years ago and we have been friends since. She was always very impressive during the CELTA course even though she hadn’t had experience prior to that, she was a natural teacher! Since then she has been working as an English teacher and we often ask each other for advice (I am also an English teacher) and she always helps me out. She would be a great addition to your team.
