About Floris
I'm an easygoing online piano teacher who focuses on making piano learning actually fun. I cover all genres except classical music and am all about positive reinforcement during the learning process. I believe that playing piano is an amazing way to express yourself and develop self-confidence through practice.
I hold a Bachelor's in Jazz & Pop from the Conservatory of Utrecht and a Master of Music in Jazz Piano from NYU. With 20 years of teaching experience and time as an adjunct faculty member at NYU, I bring both classroom and studio expertise. As a professional musician I’ve performed for audiences in the thousands and released recordings that have earned millions of Spotify streams. You might have also seen some of my teaching videos on TikTok with over 2 million views and 200 mini-lessons available.

My lessons are relaxed and student-centered because I believe piano lessons should be enjoyable, not stressful. Together we'll learn to play the piano through the music you love, from Rent or Mary Poppins to John Coltrane, video-game themes, or the latest Sabrina Carpenter hit, while covering chords, sight-reading, ear training, improvisation, and songwriting when desired.
For parents: I teach from age 8 and focus on developing natural musical talent rather than strict classical technique. In my lessons, we learn how to read music, be encouraged to write their own melodies and improvise. Some of my students go on to join school bands, form a group with friends, or perform in talent shows. I also help them prepare for their performances.
In the 10 years I've now been teaching online, I have developed a system that works for the student: keys, chord symbols, and the sheet music appear on the screen during the lesson as well as a full lesson recording is provided afterward. This has been a tremendous resource for students to revisit their previous lessons and sticking points.

My son has been learning piano with Floris for about two years now, and I am extremely happy with his progress. His technical ability has improved substantially, and he is already playing fairly complex classical pieces. More importantly, he has developed a genuine interest in music. He looks forward to his music lessons and practices on his own, without any encouragement from his parents. That speaks volumes about Floris' ability as a music teacher. I would highly recommend Floris to anyone looking to improve their piano skills or wanting to build an appreciation for music in general.
Great teacher. Lessons well adapted to the student's level. Always inspiring to keep going.
I got referred to Floris from another parent at school. My husband and I tried other teachers, but Floris’s warm and patient style really hit the right tone with my two children (9 & 11). They can be a lot.. and I was a bit skeptical because it's online, but he seems to have endless patience! He's really knowledgeable and knows how to talk about music in an engaging way. Before they had a hard time focusing more than 5 minutes! Now they both take half-hour lessons with ease and are actually learning how to play the keyboard. I can't recommend Floris enough!
Floris played in my band for years, where we performed all over New York City and surrounding U.S. states. His knowledge of and passion for the instrument are impressive, to say the least, and he's a joy to work with. Highly recommend.
I found Floris on an online advertising platform where he posted an ad for piano teaching. I was looking for a piano teacher in New York after the one I had moved to New Orleans. At that time, lessons required physical presence, so I received lessons in the places where he lived between 2014 and until Covid. During Covid, we started online lessons, and after that, he moved to Europe, but we continued our lessons until late 2024 when I needed to stop for personal reasons.
Floris is a very patient and supportive piano teacher. I was quite a beginner when I started with him, and we had lessons two or three times per month. Although my interest in piano learning is jazz, he encouraged me to try other genres and did it in a way that would allow a transition between genres so I could enjoy the process.
He focuses on the enjoyment of playing and not on completing one lesson after the next. He also plays for his students so that a lesson is not just him supervising what you practiced, but also includes watching him play certain passages, seeing how the hands must be positioned, how to sit properly when playing, how to relax when at the piano, etc.
I highly recommend Floris as a piano teacher. He is a very educated person, very wise and responsible. I think we became friends. Once he visited New York after he had moved to Europe and even managed to set aside some time to give me an informal piano lesson at my house. One learns to play piano with him. He adores teaching it.
We have remained in contact. When he was in NYC, he had a musical ensemble, and I went twice to see them in action.
Go for it. You will be happy with that decision.Floris has been teaching myself and my three children virtually, in various configurations, for a few years now and we couldn't be happier with his tutelage! After very many in-person tutors, Floris's enthusiasm and approach have been most effective and motivating for our family. He is patient, calm, engaging and encouraging, and meets his student where they're at. He offers support and understanding of each student's expressed musical wishes and pace, and also gently challenges towards advancement and progress given his own expertise. We are lucky to have found him!
