About Derek
I have worked as a children's entertainer for several years, providing balloon art, costume characters, magic shows and various other party services. Upon receiving my A.A., I worked for three school years as a substitute teacher for Broward County Public Schools. As of May 2020, I had my B.A.S. conferred and earned my professional educator certificate as of July 2020 from the FLDOE (Happy to provide documentation). This process required passing all for sections of the General Knowledge Exam, the professional educator exam, the FLDOE subject area exam in Mathematics Grades 5-9 and clocking 100+ hours in field experience, followed by a short internship with Broward County Public Schools. I am nationally background checked, and trained to provide differentiated instruction for students of all walks of life, while also efficiently integrating technology and allowing students to collaborate to solve real world problems.

My teaching method is a student-centered, social-constructivist view. Lev Vygotsky's theory of proximal development points out that the individual student is only capable of so much on their own ability to complete a task; When students work together with the goal of accomplishing something, they can scaffold upon one another's experiences, and lift each other up, past the threshold of what they were incapable of by themselves. Students need to communicate with one another- take the information outlined by the teacher facilitating from the sidelines, and be allowed to work together on far more complex, meaningful issues that exist in the real world. Integrating technology and encouraging collaboration on STEM activities is integral to giving students a platform to approach problems they themselves want to solve in their world and in their communities. Students need opportunities to critically think for themselves, but also need opportunities to express their findings in a creative way.
