Translated: I think being able to read something, understand what it's saying, then clearly and accurately express your thoughts on it via written communication is really useful in pretty much any facet of life.

The goal is the most important thing; understanding different people will reach that goal by different paths is just as critical. I start by working with students to create a set of desired outcomes we both agree are 1) valuable and 2) reasonable, then work backwards to figure out the best way to get there. Sometimes that's a series of smaller, focused exercises designed to improve on one specific skill. While in other instances it's preferable to focus on a key deliverable like an essay. It all depends on what each student needs.
