About Lauren

I'm a Linguistics BA Hons Graduate from the University of Manchester. I have two years experience working in the charity sector as Campaigns Coordinator in the Comms department, and one year corporate experience prior to this. I have been tutoring for two years.

My tutoring experience includes working through tutoring schools in Manchester, working with a government-funded tutoring agency supporting vulnerable children from challenging backgrounds, and one-on-one private tutoring. All together I have tutored approximately 70 students.

I am particularly good at confidence building with my students, which I've found to be hugely underestimated with its links to academic achievement. I've worked with a huge variety of students; I've taught students as young as 7, adult learners, children in-care, students attending private schools, students who just need to make sure they get the required 4/5 grade in their English GCSE, and students looking to reach the top grades. I have also helped to diagnose dyslexia and ADHD in one particular student, which hugely improved the way his school supported him during lessons moving forward.

I have had great success with many of my students; particularly with children struggling to achieve the required 4/5 grade in their GCSE English - I've yet to have a student fail to reach this target. With one year of tutoring, I was able to bring a child who was a year behind his age group up to the same learning level of his peers. I strive to make our lessons enjoyable as well - especially when we’re working on the more tedious bits! - and generally get on very well with my students, which I find helps them to build respect for me as a tutor and mentor. I always make sure my students understand the topic in hand thoroughly, and strive to help them understand the relevance of what they are learning to the modern-day world, which makes the subject more interesting and valuable to the student as a result. I use online tools in all of my lessons, so that the student is able to learn how to research and revise their topics online independently.

I'm very friendly and an empathetic person. I truly believe everyone can achieve their potential with the right kind of teaching and confidence building; unfortunately the schooling system doesn't always accommodate for all types of students and ways of learning. I was a high achieving student at school and university but always found alternative ways of learning to my peers, so am good at finding creative routes to understanding and memorising a subject. I'm a big fan of felt tips and colour coding, and using music
and artistic methods to remember facts and theories! I have a particularly good awareness and understanding of ADD/ADHD and so am very willing to tutor students with these behaviours.

I'm good at building confidence in people - I believe achieving academic success is just as much about self confidence as it is about learning and understanding the subject thoroughly. Lots of students get left behind because their way of learning is different to typical classroom teaching, and as a result lose confidence in themselves, when often all they need is an alternative method of learning that will match their unique way of processing and digesting information.
