About Jack
At Eton I achieved all A*s at GCSE, before gaining an A in A-level English. I have recently graduated from the University of Birmingham with a 2:1 in English and Drama. I have achieved these results with a combination of the keenest eye for detail and a formidable work ethic. Now as a tutor, these are the same traits I bring to teaching, and that I hope to inspire in my students as well.

Having recently passed through the system myself I am highly attuned to what markers are looking for, and thus I can say that the marks are in the minutiae. The three words I instil in students in order to play to this are 'decision', 'precision' and 'concision'. By this I mean I teach students to make bold choices with their interpretation; that it is exact and justifiable; and that it is expressed in the most efficient and coherent way possible. Before the first lesson I will set the student an unseen passage, normally prose or poetry, to analyse and write on. This allows me to immediately identify students' weaknesses, but just as crucially their strengths. From here the work can begin. Developing a unique work plan and approach for each student according to their requirements, I ensure that weaknesses become strengths and strengths become strengthened. I also write plays and poetry, having been shortlisted for the 2016 National Theatre Young Playwriting Competition, and so students looking for assistance with creative writing rather than such an exam-based focus are also extremely welcome.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Jack helped my son, Ben, prepare for his Literature GCSE last year. Ben is dyslexic and a ‘numbers person’, and has always struggled to engage with works of fiction in a meaningful way. Jack broke down Macbeth and the rest of the Syllabus into simple to understand chunks, and helped Ben see the importance and relatability of these pieces even in the modern age. Jack was patient, kind and went above and beyond and we could now recommend him enough.
Jack is without fail always meticulously prepared and his contributions as a teacher in seminars was always thoughtful and carefully articulated. His careful attention to detail is matched by her ability to link textual detail to wider concerns and debates surrounding a given play or performance.
Jack helped our son for several months with English language and literature. We got him involved as our son (Y11 - preGCSEs) was getting progressively worse, very poor scores in English language and literature of between 3-5 (per GCSE gradings). Our son`s difficulties were compounded by his significant attentional issues.
Jack was consistently gentle and kind, which helped him establish a very good rapport with our son leading him to start to engage with the subject. Jack was very open to our input, such as providing easy to follow response structures for our son to follow, very easy to deal with, and has a strong grasp of the subject given his own academic background.
As a result of this intervention, our son`s grades finally stabilised and he eventually achieved a 6 and an 8 in English language and literature - grades that were once unthinkable.Jack is an outstanding individual. Highly intelligent and articulate, he is also most patient, encouraging and personable. Therefore, for all these skills, Jack makes an excellent tutor. Jack's interests are wide-ranging, notably his expertise in literature and the theatre.
