GAMSAT S2 Tutoring
My GAMSAT tutoring philosophy is underpinned by assessing your strengths and weaknesses. If you struggle with formulating ideas, we will delve into thinking philosophically about S2 themes and prompts. As someone from an historical and philosophical background, I can help you extract insightful talking points from prompts (through thoughtful eyes and historical/political/interpersonal examples to substantiate your discussions). Subsequently, I will guide you through structuring your contention and discussion points around your given essay topic.
Once you gain confidence in formulating ideas, we can begin forming concepts and essay structures with unlimited time (followed by simulating timed conditions when your confidence and acumen grows). We can subsequently apply this method to writing essays in untimed and timed conditions.
Upon reaching the essay writing stage (or assuming your weaknesses pertain to your writing, rather than your ideas), I will employ my technical writing skills to analyse your syntax, grammar, and readability. Subsequently, I will demonstrate how your writing can be more concise/how you can articulate your ideas with greater accuracy and articulation.
My sessions are $80 an hour. I am a patient and empathetic tutor, who believes gentle encouragement mixed with constructive criticism brings the best out of students. If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to reach out!
English Tutoring (Foundation to VCE English)
Fundamentally, English is about interpreting language and formulating contentions. Once students learn how to formulate contentions, they can begin to understand how arguments and evidence reaffirm said contentions. By creating this foundational understanding, students can devote more of their intellectual energy to formulating ideas.
Once students understand this structure, we can then develop how they respond to prompts and articulate themselves. In this phase, students learn how to improve their writing, syntax and grammar. I have two methods to improving student writing. The first is through providing written examples and corrections. The second is through questioning and guided discovery (e.g., an effective way to make students communicate information clearly is by asking them what unnecessary words can be removed from their writing).
In a high school context, understanding marking criteria is vital. By teaching students what assessors and educators expect of them, we can create a framework to improve student writing output by addressing each individual criteria. It also provides students with actionable steps they can take to progress.
In a primary school context, I encourage students to be creative whilst ensuring they understand the fundamentals of English. Consequently, conversations regarding marking criteria with students are subtle and embedded into the lesson, rather than being too overt.
Finally, students thrive when they are respected and when tutors are patient. I always deliver feedback gently, and never show any signs of impatience if a student is struggling to understand an idea. Additionally, I believe layering critical feedback with compliments and praise is vital to ensuring students remain confident and motivated to be better. Mindset is extremely important to setting up students for success.
