About Danyang

I am a TCSOL-qualified Mandarin teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience, specialising in GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level Chinese. I am also a GCSE Mandarin Speaking Examiner and certified HSK Examiner, giving me a clear understanding of exam requirements, assessment criteria and what distinguishes a secure answer from a high-scoring one.

Students often come to me with very different needs. Some are struggling to keep up with Mandarin at school, particularly with vocabulary, grammar or characters. Others understand much of what they have learnt in class but lack confidence in speaking and listening, especially as exams approach.

A common challenge is that students know the language, but are not always clear about how to turn that knowledge into a strong exam response. They may be unsure how to structure a speaking answer, develop their ideas, approach a writing task or understand exactly what the examiner is looking for.

My role is not simply to teach more Chinese. I help students identify where they are now, where marks are being lost and what they need to do next. I then turn these areas into clear, manageable targets and help students build both the language skills and exam strategies they need to work towards them with greater clarity and confidence.

I have developed my own structured GCSE Chinese programme and teaching materials, and I also run several GCSE Chinese group classes locally at different ability levels. This gives me extensive experience of the common difficulties students face at different stages of exam preparation.

Many of the GCSE students I have supported have gone on to achieve Grades 8–9, particularly those who work consistently and engage fully with the programme.

I also support students through intensive GCSE exam preparation. In recent cases, students have made significant progress within a small number of focused lessons, with school teachers commenting on the noticeable improvement between mock and final speaking exams.

My aim is to help students make clear, measurable progress towards their individual exam goals.

Each student begins from a different starting point, so lessons are tailored around their current level, target grade, exam board and individual areas for development.

I support students following AQA GCSE Chinese, Pearson Edexcel GCSE Chinese, Cambridge IGCSE Chinese and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chinese specifications. A-Level Chinese preparation is also available.

At the beginning, I identify the key skills and gaps limiting the student’s performance and set clear priorities for improvement.

Depending on the student’s needs, lessons may focus on:

* speaking fluency, accuracy and developing stronger responses
* writing structure, vocabulary range and accuracy
* listening and reading techniques
* grammar and sentence-building
* exam technique and understanding mark-scheme requirements

A particular focus is placed on helping students move beyond short or simple answers and produce longer, more accurate and more detailed responses.

New language and exam techniques are taught and then applied through speaking, writing and exam-style tasks, helping students use what they have learned more independently.

Progress is reviewed regularly, with clear feedback and next steps. Teaching priorities are adjusted so that students understand what has improved, what still needs work and how they are progressing towards their target grade.

Students receive targeted homework and lesson materials to consolidate learning between lessons and develop greater independence in revision.

The goal is not simply to complete more work, but to help students produce stronger answers and make consistent progress towards their exam goals.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

As a Mandarin teacher, I possess fluency in the language owing to my Chinese origins. Having been born and raised in Northern China, I developed a clear and standard pronunciation which proves advantageous during lessons, as it facilitates better comprehension for learners.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I believe Jackie Chan is a living embodiment of Mandarin culture. Not only is he a talented actor and martial artist, but he also embodies the values of hard work, perseverance, and humility that are so important in Chinese culture.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

"有缘千里来相会" (yǒu yuán qiān lǐ lái xiāng huì) is a beautiful phrase in Mandarin, which means that destiny can bring individuals together no matter how far apart they are. This expression emphasizes the significance of fate and relationships in Chinese culture, including the special bond between a tutor and their student who are brought together for a common purpose:-)
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world and is the official language of China, which has the second-largest economy in the world. Knowing Mandarin can open up many economic opportunities for business, trade, and investment in China.

Mandarin is becoming an increasingly popular language choice in schools around the world, and learning it can give students an edge in college admissions and future job prospects.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

There are several difficulties in learning Mandarin, including:
    • Tones: Mandarin is a tonal language, which means that the meaning of words can change depending on the tone used to pronounce them. This can be particularly difficult for learners who are not accustomed to distinguishing between different tones.

    • Characters: Mandarin uses Chinese characters, which are completely different from the Roman alphabet used in English. Learning these characters can take a lot of time and effort.
    • Grammar: Mandarin grammar can be challenging for English speakers because the sentence structure and word order are often different from what they are used to.

To help with the learning process, you can:
    • Finding a professional tutor who can provide guidance and feedback throughout the learning process can be invaluable. Tutors can offer personalised instruction and support, helping you overcome obstacles and make progress more quickly.
    • Consistency and persistence are also key, learning a new language takes time and effort, so it's important to practice regularly and stay motivated.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was learning English as a second language, I struggled with differentiating between the words "hear" and "listen." Despite studying grammar rules and vocabulary extensively, it was hard for me to grasp the subtle differences in meaning between these two words.

One day, my English teacher shared an anecdote that helped me fully understand the distinction. She said, "Hearing is simply perceiving sound through your ears, but listening is actively paying attention to what you hear and processing its meaning."

This simple yet powerful explanation taught me that language learning is not just about memorizing technical details like grammar rules and vocabulary. It's about understanding the nuances of communication and developing the ability to interpret and respond appropriately to what we hear. This lesson has stayed with me throughout not only my language learning but also my teaching journey.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Travel and immersion in a language and culture can be incredibly beneficial for improving language skills. One personal example I can share is that of my son, who was born in the UK and primarily spoke English. However, after spending just one month in China, he made significant progress in his Mandarin abilities. Not only was he able to communicate with my parents for hours on end, but he also used more complex vocabulary and demonstrated a better understanding of Chinese customs and culture.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Superprof is a well-established tutoring platform that connects teachers with students. It offers a great user experience, allowing teachers to easily manage their lessons, schedule appointments, and communicate with students. Additionally, Superprof doesn't charge commission fees on tuition for a premium account.

Superprof also has a review system where students can leave feedback and ratings after each lesson, which helps teachers build a strong professional reputation and increase their bookings. For teachers looking to grow their teaching business, Superprof presents an excellent option.
