About Rianne

Every GCSE student I've taught has finished above their predicted grade.

I'm from Hong Kong — I lived there 15 years before moving to the UK — and I'm a native speaker of Cantonese, Mandarin and English. I've been tutoring for three years, and I teach Hong Kong Cantonese with traditional characters, which is what people in Hong Kong actually speak and write.

GCSE and HSK Mandarin is where most of my students are. I work through the exam board's spec with them, but I spend just as much time on the parts that don't show up in a mark scheme — the confidence to actually speak, and knowing what the examiner is looking for.

Cantonese adults come to me for all sorts of reasons: to talk with a partner's Hong Kong family, because their parents are from Hong Kong and they never learned properly, for a trip, or simply because they love the language. Complete beginners are genuinely welcome. One of my students has been with me for three years now.

I also help with English and homework support for years 1–10.

I study Psychology at the University of Bath, which shapes how I teach — I'm interested in where someone gets stuck and why, not just in getting through the material.

Chinese has a reputation for being impossible. In my experience the tones are the only genuinely hard part, and most people get further than they expected once someone shows them the pattern.

How I work. I prepare material for every lesson and give you written notes with step-by-step grammar progression, so you can review between sessions rather than starting from scratch each week. If there's something specific you want to cover, tell me and I'll build the lesson around it.

GCSE and HSK Mandarin. Exam technique, character writing, listening and reading strategy, sentence and paragraph structure — targeted at whichever areas are actually costing marks. I'll be honest with you and your parents about where things stand and what needs work.

Cantonese. Structured grammar with clear progression, taught in Hong Kong Cantonese and traditional characters. We move between English and Cantonese at whatever pace suits you, so you're never lost. Whether you want to hold a conversation with your partner's family, order food in Hong Kong, or just enjoy learning it, we'll build the route to that.

The first lesson is about working out where you're starting from and what you actually want, then agreeing a plan. No pressure to have it figured out beforehand — most people don't.

I'm patient, I don't mind repeating things, and I'd much rather you asked the "silly" question than sat quietly not understanding.
