About Matthew
With a wealth of teaching experience and having held multiple professional roles in the secondary and tertiary education sectors, I can capably guide students through the skills, knowledge and rigour required to be successful in their exams.
I teach not only to support the learning and progress of my students, but to also instil motivation, independence and academic self-efficacy; for me, the student's understanding of their own learning journey is critical to the success of the tuition sessions.
Through diverse approaches to planning, resources, questioning, formative and summative assessment, and interleaving, I ensure all acquired knowledge builds on students' prior understanding and is made accessible.

My lessons usually last 45 minutes to 1 hour. They are student-centric and contain both attainment and aspiration-raising elements. Initial skills audits are triangulated with in-school assessment scores and understanding of the student's preferred approaches to teaching. The resources and activities of the sessions will be selected to concretise existing knowledge, introduce new ideas and approaches, and to challenge students.
I hold a PGCE in Secondary English (Teach First), from Birmingham City University. I have 2 years of private tuition experience (conducted whilst teaching).
I am experienced in all popular GCSE English exam boards, with particular expertise in AQA.
My additional experience includes academic mentorship, application guidance and support for students aiming to attend Top Third universities, mock Multi-Mini-Interviews for medicine and dentistry courses, as well as maintaining professional responsibility for online tuition quality assurance.
