About Caralie
2/20/21: Currently updating as information is out of date.
I am a recent UCLA grad who holds a B.A. in Sociology. During my time at UCLA, I was an English tutor (and sometimes tutored History) to students at a high school in Los Angeles, CA. I would tutor between 20-30 students at a time by leading in-class activities, and by assisting the teacher with her work. I would also tutor and mentor students one-on-one, paying special attention to students who needed assistance bringing their grades to passing levels. In addition to tutoring, I was also involved in student note taking at UCLA through the Office of Students with Disabilities (now the Center for Accessible Education).

When working with students, I first like to get a complete understanding of what their academic struggles are. Before fully diving into the subject, I like to do a warm-up activity to help get the student focused. This can include a simple review of what was covered in a previous lesson or a fun game to get the student's mind eased into the subject. During a lesson, I find it really fun and useful to apply academic concepts to real life situations or tell an entertaining story to help the student understand a concept. It's a great way to simplify something, especially since reading out of a textbook with academic language can make a subject extremely boring or difficult to understand. Another tool I've mastered for academic success is organized note taking. Through extensive experience taking notes for myself, and for other students during college, I've been able to create notes that are detailed, yet concise. This is helpful when studying for exams or writing essays later on.
