Truth is, you may not be able to. That does not mean you throw your hands in the air though. Take the students aside, and let the student know you care about him or her, and that you want them to be successful in life and have all manner of good things in their future. Let them know that doing well in school opens more doors, and you want them to have choices so they can find a career that not only supports them, but doesn’t make them hate getting up in the morning. Invite them to your tutorials, and if you do not have tutorials, pick an afternoon or morning and start having them. This will not only give you a chance to help students more academically, but will give you a chance to connect with kids who may need the attention of a nurturing adult.
