About Grace

I currently work in clinical research in neurology studies, but have a degree in Biology from Penn State. I am starting a Master's in Science in Bioengineering in the fall. I have tutored for many years with notable experience as a learning assistant to an Introductory Biology Course at Penn State, where I helped students succeed through guided coursework, study skills, and one-on-one sessions to review content.

My tutoring approach is centered on building confidence, clarity, and long-term understanding. I believe the best learning happens when students feel comfortable asking questions and are actively involved in the problem-solving process rather than simply being given answers.

Teaching Method & Techniques:

I use a student-centered teaching style, meaning I adapt each lesson to the student’s learning style, pace, and goals. My sessions focus on:

- Breaking down complex concepts into simple, manageable steps**
- Using real-world examples and analogies to make material relatable
- Encouraging active recall and guided problem solving
- Identifying knowledge gaps and strengthening foundational concepts
- Reinforcing material through practice questions and repetition
- Teaching study strategies and test-taking techniques, not just content

I like to ask students to explain concepts back to me in their own words, because teaching a concept is one of the best ways to truly understand it.

A Typical Lesson Plan

A typical session usually follows this structure:

1. Quick check-in (5 minutes)
Review what was covered previously and identify any challenging topics from class, homework, or exams.

2. Concept review and instruction (15–20 minutes)
Go over the core topic for the session, explain key ideas clearly, and walk through examples step by step.

3. Guided practice (20–30 minutes)
Work through practice problems together, allowing the student to lead while I provide support and feedback.

4. Independent application (10–15 minutes)
Have the student solve similar problems independently to build confidence and mastery.

5. Wrap-up and next steps (5 minutes)
Summarize key takeaways, assign optional practice, and outline goals for the next session.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to combine strong subject knowledge with patience and encouragement. I focus not only on improving grades, but also on helping students feel more confident in their abilities.

Because of my background in science, research, and higher-level coursework, I am especially skilled at helping students with:

* **Biology**
* **Chemistry**
* **Math / statistics**
* **Research methods**
* **Study skills for STEM courses**

I understand how overwhelming challenging classes can feel, and I aim to create a supportive environment where students can ask anything without judgment.

My lessons are ideal for:

* Middle school and high school students
* College undergraduate students
* Students taking introductory STEM courses
* Students preparing for exams, quizzes, or major assignments
* Students who want help with organization, study habits, and academic confidence
