My name is SethThole, a second year student in Wits University enrolling in Bachelor of accounting science. I’m a golden key member after obtaining several distinctions in my first year’s modules. I’m not only focused on school, I’m a football coach. Every business organization that has economic resources, such as money, machinery, and buildings, uses accounting information. For this reason, accounting is known as the language of business. Accounting also serves as the language that provides financial information about nonprofit organizations such as governments, churches, charities, fraternities, and hospitals. However, these entities are not businesses because they do not carry out their activities for profit. In this course, we will focus on business accounting.
The accounting process provides financial data to a wide variety of audiences with very different data research purposes. For example, bank officials might study a company's financial statements to gauge a company's ability to repay a loan. Potential investors can compare the accounting data of several companies to decide which company represents the best investment. Accounting also provides management with important financial data that is useful for decision making.
Financial accounting information that appears in the financial statements is intended primarily for external use (although management also uses this information for some internal decisions). Shareholders and creditors are two of the outside parties that need financial accounting information. These external parties decide on matters relevant to the business as a whole, such as increasing or decreasing their investment in a business or granting credit to a business. Thus, financial accounting information relates to the business as a whole, while management accounting focuses on parts or divisions of the business.
Management accounting information is for internal use and provides special information to the company's managers. Information used by managers can range from broad, long-term planning data to detailed explanations of why actual costs differ from estimated costs. A company's management accountant prepares its financial statements. Therefore, management accountants need to be knowledgeable about accounting and financial reporting. The financial statements are those of the board of directors, not the CPA company that performed the audit.
