About Alison

I have always been an artist, designer, and maker in various fields.
I initially trained as a textile designer and, after graduation, worked as a fashion buyer for almost a decade. I taught drawing and marketing at the London College of Fashion for a while before putting my career on hold to focus on raising my children. During this time, I did a diploma in interior design, and kept my creativity alive by knitting, sewing, crocheting, and upholstery.
As my family grew more independent, I returned to art making, initially exploring mixed media textiles and collage, which I exhibited and sold for several years (2010 - 2016) before my work evolved and became focused mostly on abstract painting.
I now work from a beautiful big studio in the Somerset countryside, exhibiting and selling originals and prints through galleries and my websites, and undertaking commissions, as well as teaching workshops and one-to-one in my studio.

About the lesson

Have you always wanted to paint but never known where to start? Or perhaps you have been painting for a while but are feeling a bit stuck?
If you are a beginner, we start at the beginning - exploring what inspires you, and gathering that inspiration together. Then we begin with some simple exercises and techniques to tap into the playfulness that is essential for creativity to flourish. My approach is very much student-centred, finding out what makes you feel alive. Once that confidence and freedom are flowing, we add in the exploration of new materials and techniques to give you the tools you need to achieve your goals.

For those further on in their creative journey, I offer coaching and guidance on developing work. Again, I take a bespoke approach which can include, but is not limited to, positive and encouraging feedback and critique, the creative process, and getting into the flow. Working in a series. Practical colour theory and application. Building a portfolio, framing and presentation, composition, exploring techniques, effects, and materials.

A lesson typically lasts an hour, and requires the participant to come online with a workspace nearby and basic materials that will be notified in advance.

To get the most out of the experience, students are encouraged to experiment and practise in their own time between sessions.

I only work with adults and children aged 16+

Qualifications: BA (Hons) Textile Design
11 years as a full-time working artist

Note: I have a high level of expertise and experience working with acrylics, textiles, and mixed media. However, whilst I do have some experience, I do not have technical expertise in the use of oil paints or watercolour.
