About Ella
I am a passionate reader. Since preschool, I have been reading picture books and writing fictional stories as an avocation. In first grade, I read Charlotte's Web for the first time which quickly became my favorite book. I started tutoring young students in seventh grade, where I volunteered at the local public library as a reading mentor. During Covid, I joined the Learning Buddies Organization based in Vancouver, Canada to volunteer my time as an English mentor for children of immigrant families who were struggling in the online school system. I have worked with this organization for three years now. I have always loved children, and I know how to get along with them because I spend a lot of time at home with my young cousins. In high school, I have taken the honors English track all four years and took AP English classes as a junior and senior. I received a score of 5 (the highest score) on the AP English Language and Composition test. I look forward to helping more students find a passion for reading and become more confident in their English speaking skills.

I have been tutoring elementary-aged students for four years, and I feel confident that my students have all improved their reading skills as well as their interest in books. Typically, I enjoy using simple books to help students practice fluent reading and teach them about common English phrases as well. Grammar can be difficult, but I enjoy teaching them using word games and sentence-building activities. I believe that my background as a Chinese-American qualifies my skills because I grew up struggling with English until I found a love for reading. I believe that the best way for a child to become proficient in English is to read as much as they can. I specialize in students who have a hard time concentrating and focusing in school, so they need a little extra push.
