About David
I knew I was going to be an educator for about as long as I knew I was going to be an artist, pretty much my entire life. I've taught art to nearly every age group, from 5 to 15 as a camp counselor, to college-age students, high school students taking college courses, and middle schoolers as a working artist doing outreach.
While my professional experience lies mostly in advanced college-level art, I can apply those same techniques and skills to any age group.

My approach begins with letting you know the point or end goal of an assignment, then building up to that goal in simple, easy to understand steps. I include both conceptual and material goals, so you know exactly what you are going to create and how.
For example, one drawing assignment starts with a focus on gesture, builds up to quality and weight of line, then to contour lines, and cross-contour lines using charcoal. We discuss how to handle the material to achieve the desired line qualities and why and how those qualities work for creating a sense of rhythm, movement, and space.
I will parse this assignment out over the course of a lesson, depending on the age or skill level of the student.

Quality teacher!! Drawing does not come naturally to me but Chatfield helped me soooo much and now I can actually draw figures decently. Also just a great human who is supportive and helpful in creative endeavors
David helped me ‘unstick’ my stuck brain. He is direct and intelligent. He can help open your mind while getting your pencil/pen/brush moving. I recommend him as a teacher, and as a decent human, who wants to help you find and expand your creative nature.
