About Harry

Hey! I'm a 22 year old graduate on a working holiday in Melbourne until the end of the year. I graduated a year ago with a 2:1 BA Honours in Philosophy from the University of Sheffield after studying it for 4 years. My preferred areas of study include ethics, basic formal logic and religion, but I have experience studying a good number of other topics. I enjoy being able to understand and explore the many different beliefs and theories people have towards life's most debated questions.

I tutored sixth form students (ages 16-18) during my third year in Sheffield, providing a seminar style environment to discuss topics they were studying for their exams. I am preparing for a masters in medical ethics when I return to the UK and am keen to gather more teaching experience before then.

If you are looking for help understanding and exploring certain topics of philosophy for your studies (both high school or early university levels), I am able to provide you with engaging methods that can help you develop your ideas on certain philosophical issues, as well as giving solid advice on how to present them and generally write a good philosophical essay on any topic.

With experience in running seminars for philosophy students and a 2:1 Honours degree in Philosophy, I can offer one to one online sessions up to an hour long where we can pick apart and discuss key topics you are studying (though travel may be possible in some cases if you would prefer). This is more useful for high school students or those new to university, as I will be working fairly freelance with limited teaching resources used in a classroom.

If you message me in advance explaining which subjects or topics you need help with understanding, I can provide questions and ideas we can discuss in a lesson format which can help you develop your own arguments, as well as support you in critically examining them and the different arguments of others.

On top of this I can offer general exercises with examples such as playing devil's advocate so that you must keep arguing around difficult subjects, or guiding you through understanding various fallacies so that you develop good arguing technique and can identify errors in arguments that you might analyse, or even your own.

I believe that in Philosophy there are very few bad ideas. Some ideas are far more well constructed than others but the way we interpret the world and its questions is very personal and worth discussing and sharing. Nothing you suggest should be ignored, it's the first step in developing your philosophical skills and your abilities in working with other people and their different views.

If you think you would benefit more from face to face tutoring then I will ask for $10 towards travel (or $15 over 10km) as I have no car and it will factor in some of my time as well as costs for transport.

If you want a lesson pack I would prefer multiple lessons during the week rather than weekly single lessons.

No cancellation fees for the moment, as I'm getting myself settled in Melbourne and don't mind the spontaneity currently.
