About Sirneh
As an educator, I like to conceptualize my pedagogical practice by drawing from my upbringing as a global citizen. Growing up between Cameroon and America had graced me with perspective on how there is no one walk of life identical to another. With that in mind, I believe every English Language learner (ELL) student has individual needs and it is our responsibility to fulfill those needs to the best of our ability. Beyond ESL, education should be enabling, and I don’t approach it as an obligation, but as a tool to find freedom. ESL is so much more than the transference of knowledge from one mind to another, it is a way to enhance humanity, so I aim to maneuver the plasticity of a student's mind past the material in hopes it instills curiosity to want to know and see past confines of a classroom but to look at the opportunities English offers and make it theirs. I am a strong advocate for variety in tutoring, and a strong believer that all students are naturally intelligent but some require a little more to uncover. In my opinion, neurodivergence awareness is not emphasized enough in traditional curriculum practice, and so for an ESL course, diversifying our teaching styles to include unconventional learning styles is an extra step but makes all the difference. Students do not have to know if they are neurodivergent or not to benefit from this, so creating a learning environment that invites exploration can instill confidence in learners to speak up on their needs. I try to be attentive to students who get restless and need a change of pace. Sometimes by altering the ambiance of the lesson like white noise music during quiet time, and even unconventional seating options like bean bag chairs can increase the morale incredibly.

I’ve had the privilege of teaching English to a wide range of learners—from high school students navigating academic English to working adults building fluency for their careers and daily life, ranging in age from 14 to 45 and beyond. No matter the age or background, my lessons are always structured to be clear, engaging, and relevant. A typical session includes a warm-up to activate prior knowledge and spark conversation, followed by integrated practice that combines listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Each lesson ends with a real-world application of the language point—whether through role-play, dialogue building, or task-based communication—so learners leave with confidence and practical tools they can use right away. As humans, we are social beings. We need to understand the social context we inhabit out of survival, how I translate this into an ESL class is by integrating my lesson plans with the social world. Usually after getting to know a little bit more about my students, I try to generate activities that make them feel equipped to handle familiar and unfamiliar situations. This can be teaching high-frequency vocabulary common for New York City like asking for directions, to more low-frequency vocab around what to do if they were on Jeopardy. Bouncing between deductive and inductive styles of teaching, I believe students should feel like they can not only speak English with anyone, but also connect with anyone. These two aspects of teaching are just the surface of my practice, but they resonate with me deeply. Lastly, to remember there is a community in learning English, inviting all walks of life into an ESL classroom, with my guidance, we’ll learn together and let curiosity unlock freedom.
