About Ellie

* My lessons are ideal for aspiring journalists who want industry insight and to practice doing the sort of tasks that would be expected of them in the newsroom. *

I began freelancing as a broadcast journalist with the BBC whilst studying for my BA in International Relations at King's College London, then earned a Diploma in Journalism from the National Council for the Training of Journalists. I've worked everywhere from Radio 4 to Politics Live to The Andrew Marr Show and more, plus edited a national radio current affairs programme and interviewed the Foreign Secretary on Election night, so I've seen many sides of the industry!
I bring practical knowledge of how to work, network and excel in a newsroom environment, plus industry insight into how to write copy worthy of publication and ask your interviewees the questions that get to the heart of the issue.
I want to help aspiring journalists refine their writing abilities so they can master the art of turning their research into a compelling story, using inventive language and spectacular grammar. I can also discuss contemporary political issues and critique your public speaking skills (I was the Debating Chair at my school and a Model United Nations fanatic!)

These lessons are aimed at students aged 16-22, and would be ideal for anyone who is trying to break into the world of journalism. Maybe you'll write for your university's paper or be a debater at your school. You'll definitely be a quick thinker and be unafraid to tackle topics that are completely new to you. I am lively and fun but very exacting when it comes to my work: I will expect you to strive for perfection. It doesn't matter if you fall short, it's just about pushing yourself and never settling for what you have now, because I can help you grow!

RESEARCH LESSON - 1 hour
- We choose a current topic (e.g. coronavirus vaccines, school exams, Bitcoin, Alexei Navalny)
- We work together on a Google Doc. First, I set out a plan for your research, then you research semi-independently for 30 minutes; you are free to ask me any questions you have about sources, how to organise things, which details to include.
- I check out your research, advise you on where to improve, and how to make it easy to translate your research into a story

WRITING LESSON (for after a research lesson, or bring research you already have e.g. from a school project) - 1.5 hours
- We choose a style of story ('hard' news story, opinion piece, mini podcast, listicle)
- We create a basic plan for your story, then slot your research into it
- On a joint Google Doc, you attempt to write your story out. Separately, I will also write parts of the story out for you to compare your finished work to.
- I go through your entire story and edit it, explaining to you why I am changing some words and how the sentences could be tightened or enhanced.

DEBATE CHAT - 30 mins
- A more informal lesson I'm open to running: we can 'argue' about any topic you wish in order to give you practice articulating your opinions and discussing topical issues.
