About Oscar

I'm tutoring in my time away from a postgraduate in Intellectual Property at Leeds University. Tutoring is something I have done both on a full-time and part-time basis consistently for over two years. My undergraduate was at Warwick and I recently completed a law conversion course. I am starting a training contract in 2020, and this, in my experience, is a very stimulating and altruistically rewarding way to save some money along the way.

My approach to tutoring focuses on getting tutees to learn in the right way. With any humanities subject, particularly at A-Level, how the facts are assembled is as important as the facts themselves, and looking through the right end of the telescope is crucial to that. I therefore focus on giving students a strong conceptual overview before diving into the details.

I am a big advocate of interactive learning. From my experience mind mapping, flash cards and visual aids have often enabled past students to recognise recurring themes and categorise facts accordingly, to decide what to use and what to ignore, so that textbooks aren't just read but analysed and essay plans are well organised.

I speak about this from my own personal experience. Hormones and relationship issues had derailed much of my sixth form, as it does with a lot of teenagers, and I was subsequently stunned when I saw A stars and As across the board, having been considered something of a write off only months earlier. But mind mapping, visual aids, repetition at the beginning and end of every new piece of revision, all in the weeks building up to my exams, meant that no matter what state I was in walking into the exam room, I knew my stuff so well that it didn’t matter.

Some students, particularly at A-Level, know the material well enough but simply don't realise this, or haven't yet been able to articulate this understanding in an organised fashion. In such instances, in addition to the above strategies, an open discussion can also help extrapolate someone's insights so that they can get it down succinctly on a piece of paper.

Ultimately the great advantage of one-to-one or small group tuition is the fact that it allows for a mixture of the many facets of teaching, whether it be brain-storming, open discussion, or just explanation, according to what suits that individual at that particular time. Therefore, although I have my preferred methods, much depends on what is best in the situation and a first free lesson is largely there to find this out.

I have worked with a variety of tutees, from students written off as potential failures hoping to get a C at GCSE to A-Level, to students aspiring for a place at Cambridge and in need of an A-star. The former walked away with a B when initially predicted a fail, the latter an A-Star. I have provided a service that left people in both positions more positive in their own capabilities and with the marks to show for it.
