As a composer, I am well aware of the challenges in finding comprehensive courses and proper instruction specifically tailored to composition. Often, this discipline is mistakenly conflated with music theory, analysis, harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, and other related subjects.
For me, theory serves as a valuable tool to describe and analyze what we have written, performed, or composed. However, composition itself is an active verb rooted in the present tense. It encompasses a series of techniques and intuitions that allow us to arrange sounds and construct musical structures, serving as a means to express our inner musical landscape. It is essential to emphasize that composition and theory are distinct entities, and I assure you that you will receive genuine composition courses.
While my training is rooted in academic and classical traditions, the composition techniques and classes I offer are applicable to ANY music genre. I want to reiterate that this is not merely a theory class; it is a course that transcends musical backgrounds, goals, stylistic preferences, instruments, and writing approaches. Even those interested in exploring microtonal music can benefit from this knowledge.
Since the content and structure of the class heavily depend on the student's level and objectives, we will cover various topics tailored to your specific needs, including:
1. Instrumentation applied to composition: We will explore composing for different instruments and employ their unique qualities and limitations as learning tools.
2. Methods for developing the "composer's ear."
3. Techniques for mapping out musical ideas.
4. Different approaches to music composition.
5. Compositional tools derived from functional harmony, post-tonal theory, centricity, pitch-class genus, and other relevant theoretical frameworks.
6. Cultivating productive habits for composers.
7. Exploring form-based compositions.
8. Encouraging free-form compositions.
9. Addressing any areas where you may lack competence, such as writing skills, ear training, or basic theoretical knowledge. These areas will be addressed concurrently with the composition lessons.
By tailoring the classes to your level and requirements, I aim to provide a comprehensive and enriching learning experience.
Thank you for considering my composition courses. I am eager to embark on this journey with you and help you develop your composition skills.
Best regards,
Martin Cacho
